mic stands with "swivel" sections?
« on: March 02, 2008, 12:21:28 AM »

I have a Amvona stand.  It's a good value, but I just noticed one problem.  I recorded a show last night, and I had the tripod legs tucked under a small table (for protection) in a bar directly in front of the sound guy.  I left for a split second and came back.  The table got bumped while I was gone and the table legs twisted the legs on the mic stand like a set of gears...messing up the mic position up top.  I noticed late in the set and had no quick recourse, since the telescoping sections of the amvona are fixed.  I waited until a song break and moved everything back, but I am wondering...are there other stands that allow you to twist the telescoping sections at will?

Thanks.

Practically all of them do (Bogen/Manfrotto, Avenger).  That is the caveat with these cheap Dynatran stands, they got the toungue and groove action and thus cannot be twisted relative to one another.  Also, I wanna point out that this is inconvienent when you gotta have the legs in a particular position relative the the mic orientation (like trying to prevent the forward leg from sticking straight out).  I suggest ponying up the extra dough and never having to worry about that again.

I have one of the dynatran stands and it has been fine, especially with good blocking help, but looking through threads and archives, there doesn't seem to be a clear reco for stands.

If I was looking to upgrade what would you all suggest?

I use a quick-release adapter on top and can rotate my mics without an issue this way.

If you have a problem relating to the Live Music Archive (http://www.archive.org/details/etree) please send an e-mail to us admins at LMA(AT)archive(DOT)org or post in the LMA thread here and we'll get on it.

Me too.  This is why I never noticed I might have a problem before, because I can rotate the mics anyway I want before I hike them 9-10 feet in the air.  Once they are up there, though, I'm stuck with their position unless I lower the stand and move the quick release or twist the whole thing.

I've listened to the show once now, and even though the stand got twisted on it's axis about 30 degrees, I haven't been able to find the spot it happened nor the point when I moved it back (listening on cheap PC headphones, though).
