Brickwalled recording with M10 and CA Ugly 2
« on: August 16, 2018, 06:40:51 AM »
Hi guys,

I've recently purchased a CA Ugly 2 in the yardsale. I tried to use it last week at a concert (CA Ugly all the way up and the M10 on 2). But the recording is brickwalled and distorted and unlistenable.

What did I miss? I have a CA Ugly 2 with a blue light in case that should matter.

Thanks for the help!

Those sound like rather extreme settings to me.  Try setting the Ugly 2 at 10 or 15 and the M10 no lower than, say, 4 or 5.  How loud was the music at the venue?

M10 should be on no more than 3.5 or 4 (that's "unity gain" give or take -- and there's a whole debate on that).  Ugly 2 needn't be set that high.

Did you use "line in" or "mic in" for the Ugly 2.  Needs line in.

Fresh, quality battery?  That can sometimes yield unwarranted results.

Line in yes, I was using a CA9100 before and always had that one set to the max. Fresh Panasonic battery, next time I'll make sure the pre-amp settings will be lower. What a shame thought that I've messed this one up. It was a great show.

You should never have needed to run the 9100 that hot.  The 9200/Ca-Ugly 2 runs even hotter with the gain steps so I'd check to see how much gain was selected with the "fine tuning pots" and then the main one.  For rock shows, you shouldn't need very much gain unless your in a stadium where you're further back _or_ in a theatre where it's quieter.

Panasonic battery?  Was it an alkaline?  I'd suggest using Energizer Industrial or Duracell Pro-Cell batteries if you can find them.  They're much more reliable and longer lasting.

Sorry to hear this. I sold you the amp. Didn't know you didn't know how to use it!

ca-9100 gives maximum 20db gain.
ca-9200 / ca-ugly II gives max. 40db gain.

I've used ca-9000 , ca-9100 , ca-9200, ca-uglyII and for normal rock shows on all amps I've never used more than 15db gain.

Only time I used 40db gain is for fully acoustic shows.

Oh well. Now you know. Better luck next show!
