glad to see we're thinking the same thing, Jeff...

Great minds think alike ;D
-
Do they do the jk labs setup for the 480's ??? ???
I thought it was only for the 460's...
-
they do it for the ck6x caps....the bodies dont even come into the equation
-
If you guys used some real mics, you could just use the active setup that came with them.
-
true, but if you like mics that sound good, then you need to go this route 8)

HAHAHAHAHA +T nick!!!! funny ;D

how do you define real mics?
-
Any mics that i own.

Actually I don't. I have a pair of AKG factory produced actives for my 460's. They don't work with the ck61/63 etc caps though. I have ck1x (card) and 2x (omni) caps for them. They are extremely rare.

real to each ones ears....it was a joke ;D
-
you know it wasn't... meow

I'm pretty sure bkirby ran it as did Jon ???? Pretty sweet little setup I may add. It was either the JK labs or the MG's, I chose the MG's.

I don't know that I'd go quite THAT far. They're pretty rare. But in the past year I've seen 3 sets of them sell. There's just not tons of 'em (kinda like my ck8 caps). As far as the JK Labs stuff goes, I'd be curious how they really sound. Do they sound anything like AKG's at all? I wonder also if Jim Williams can mod the JK labs box. I know there's like a 6 month waiting list and you have to pay up front. I priced 'em before but can't recall what it was exactly...$1200ish I think. Not cheap that's for sure.

Well, my point- it's not exactly easy to just go out and buy a pair.

i've uploaded a bunch of stuff to archive.org that are sourced from my rig which is ck6x > active cables > jk labs dvc > apogee mini me > m1 (or powerbook). i personally think the jk labs box sounds pretty close the regular 480's, but that's just my ears. it might actually clean up the sound of the 480's a little since they seemed to get a little loose in the low end in my opinion. i wouldn't run it if it didn't sound good. :)
and the cost was right around $1200-$1300 shipped from norway to my door about a year and a half ago.

The JK labs pre-amp is awesome. I used to think the MP2 was the best pre-amp for the MBHOs but the jk labs box, in my opinion, blows it away. Each box is specifically made for the mics your using so you get the best possible sound.

jon really, really knows his shit. you'll get your money's worth for the custom gear, no matter what the fair price is.

Here's the response I got.....& my birthday is on the 19th.
Family chip in gift this year ;D haven't ordered it yet but it won't be long.
Hi there.
the cost depends on what features you need/want in the DVC box.
But the cold numbers are:
AKG active cables per pair: 450 (can give you an offer of $400 due to a
cancellation).
DVC interface/mic-pre (full featured - works with all our actives): $850
Also note that we're a bit backlogged, I expect two months before delivery.

Hey all, here's some info on the JK/AKG DVC and actives.... btw, the caps, attached to the actives, fit perfectly in schoeps clips.
Hi Charles!
Hope all is well on your shores.
To recapitulate:
a) You want two AKG active cables and one _somewhat_ modified DVC at a cost
of $1340 (450 + 890) shipped. (You need two AKG capsules, a suitable
recorder and an RCA_stereo-to-YourFlavor interconnect cable beteween the DVC
and your recorder in order to have a complete recording set-up).
The DVC will be made to work with stock Oade 148 mic-pre but will also
output a signal suitable for the input on a DAT recorder.
I'm aiming at a June 2003 delivery. It's very hard to make a firm promise so
far in advance but I'll keep you updated. In light of this, your order will
be regarded as effective when a prepayment of 30% is made.
When June comes the final amount *might* be adjusted downwards (that is if
you do not need a pre-amp, I'm not sure what you decided in this regard).
The prepayment will be returned to you should a) we be unable to deliver, or
b) you decide to pull out (in which case there is a $100 fee imposed due to
nonstandard item).
