TL> V2> SBM-1
« on: March 08, 2004, 11:22:14 AM »
so I ran this onstage(card/DIN) for Lotus at Alley Katz sat night....I HAD to run the V2 with ZERO gain(gain @10, trim @ -10) and the SBM-1 was down to 6 and my levels were still hitting 3-0.
tape sounds nice and fat, with deep clear bass and kick. was glad the drums didnt overpower the right facing mic as the kick drum was a mere 3' directly to the right of the mics...

anyone else ever have to run the V2 so low?!

Wow, that is odd. When running the TL > V2 > MMe combo on-stage, I never experienced any issue like that, and I tape on-stage at the Lincoln Theatre as often as possible. I would usually have L and R gain set to 25 with trim always set on 0.

Hmmm... how close to the instruments were you?

Glad to see a couple of guys running the TL > V2 combo, especially with sbm-1's and MMe behind that. Great sounding setup to my ears. There is what, three people running this rig now right? Luvean, Brain Sax and Justin O'Rourke? Sweet!

<--25'-->  ^
* g/k b *   |
*    g    * 35'
*p  x  d*   |
*******  v

g/k = guitar/keyboard
b = bass and stuff
g = guitar
p = percussion and electronics
d = drums (facing percussion)
x = onstage mics(all 3 sources)

mics were center to percussion and drums, with about 3' clearance on both sides.
all instruments had onstage amps

i wouldnt worry a out luvean, the last show i did was about 10' from stage and it was loud as hell, ran the v2 at about 5 db of gain and the sbm1 at about 7, although this happens a good amount for me, my AT's hav a super hot output, i dont think i ever got over 20db of gain out of the v2 going into the sbm1, things might change now that im moving to the mme a/d, no worries on running the v2 low

I think this is your answer. You were just really close to the drums and percussion, with the guitar right in front of you. As long as the tape sounds good, I would continue to tape from thart spot if you like it.

yeah, though I am pleasantly surprised that the drums arent overpowering.
the cymbals are SO crisp and clear with a nice and defined kick...these 2 things are so often missing when recording from section or stacks :)   (granted, this is mostly due to foh)

have a upcoming on-stage run this weekend: Big In Japan at Fletchers(B'more) and TransAM at Alley Katz(hopefully)
