Just curious what people think about the following as a portable power solution for this type of thing?

It may work but it may introduce noise to the recording.  Low end DC to AC inverters don't output true sign wave AC signals which may lead to noise in the output of the AC device.


When stepping voltage up you need a switching dc-dc converter design which requires an oscillator (not to mention the DC to AC step - which could use the same oscillating section), this oscillator will add noise (and depending on the frequency and filtering circuit) may be audible. 


It all is in how the circuit was designed - lower cost typically leads to a poorer designed circuit and lower quality parts which equate to a greater chance of audible noise or other issues.
