installed shared venue mics?
« on: July 06, 2013, 08:09:23 AM »
Do any have / share installed sweet spot mic/pre amps?
Just seems logical not to have all these rigs experimenting nite after nite when there is a know
 spot mics could beinstalled

I have a permanent set up in a bar/music hall that I frequent. It consists of a multiple mic bar with a four channel xlr snake running to a spot next to the soundboard where I set up.
This makes it easier for any other guest tapers to set up, or I will sometimes run two sets of mics to do comps. I leave a basic set up and spare recorder with the house in case I can’t be at a show.
The coolest install I have seen is Ted’s multi-channel set up at the Stone Church in Newmarket.

That might be logical, and I might be offbase here, but I don't think many tapers would leave their own gear home if they knew they could patch into someone elses permanently installed rig.  It's just not as much fun to me to listen back to a recording that isn't made with my own gear, EVEN when I know the other source would sound better.

That said, if all I had the money for was a recorder, I'd certainly welcome a patch bay at every venue.

I have installed a stereo mic bar and clips with a pair of mic cables that go back to the sound board in the ceiling of a local venue. I don't leave any mics up there, but I know the FOH engineer puts his own mics up there and uses it to make recordings when I'm not there.
Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.

yeah, I'm with Chuck in how I'd do it; I'd install the rigging and maybe even cables, but I doubt I'd leave any mics there. Any more then that and I'm essentially writing off the cost of the equipment if the place goes belly up, they get stolen, the building burns, etc. So anything I'm putting up there is expendable and is likely of lesser quality than even the small rig I schlep around (hence Steve's comment about leaving stuff at home turning out to be true).

my thoughts were for the venue to own/install the rig to attract tapers. Maybe charge $10 to tap in?

I think this is a bad idea and precedence.  I have heard of one venue that owns the mics and they won't let any one else run other mics - they don't charge but still the mics aren't all that and better tapes could be made.

Charging to use mics IMO is also the wrong way to go as this sets a precedence that you have to pay to tape.

Good luck dealing with the legal ramifications of charging someone to use your gear in someone elses venue to record an independent contractors music which has some intellectual property rights attached to it.  I doubt what you had to pay to cover yourself could offset the small amount you'd recover in fees, even if someone was willing to pay for tapping in.  In the end, I think the 'bad precendent' issue, while definitely valid, becomes sorta moot.  IMHO, this is one of the reasons most bands say 'no' to SBD recording...it's not because the SBD is better sounding (which is a myth anyway), it's because then the FOH engineer and venue's might want a piece of the action since their time and gear are being used.

The 'freely traded, never sold' aspect of the taping hobby tends to self-correct alot of those issues.

I'd love to hang a set of quality mics high up at my local venue The Thunderbird, which can become a chatty hellhole.
