Title: Recommendations for a home theater system

I would like to get some recommendations on a home theater system. I would prefer to stay within the $300 and under range and I have a 24 x 12 room but only plan on using about 12 x 12 of the space for the living room area. I currently have a Samsung 40" HDTV and would like to know what would be compatible and the best price/sound for the money. I am not looking for a big booming system, just something that will last and give a decent performance.

You're just looking for a sound system then (AVR/speakers)?  For that price range you will be best off with a HTiB (home theater in a box) as they typically run from $200-500 with all the stuff you need to get started.

Only advise I could offer is listen to all you can within your price range. That is a large room, if you buy locally you may be able to try before you buy but at that price I doubt it.
