Title: DAT cleaning questions
Post by: Aaron734 on May 18, 2004, 07:44:36 PM
Hey everyone,
I have a couple of questions about my DAT. I have not had it long and have not used it much (3shows only and they were short). I really like it (worlds better than the MD) and I want to keep it nice. How often should I clean the heads on it? I know it is alright to record on dds tapes, can I clean the heads with a data cleaning tape? One last thing too, does anyone know a good place online that I could get minor repairs done on it?
Thanks a lot,
Aaron

Data cleaning tape should be no problem, but keep in mind that all dry cleaning tapes are abrasive so you should clean your heads as little as possible. I usually only clean my heads if I'm noticing poor performance (dropouts, diginoise) - I'm probably on the lazy end, but my D8 is still ticking with no problems 6.5 years later. The place most folks will recommend for minor repairs is Pro Digital (prodigitalinc.com) - Paul Plotnick has taken care of tons of tapers over the years and is one of the few people who will go anywhere near the Sony portables. Nice guy, quick and reliable in my experience.

what do they say run a dry tape like every 25 hrs or so.  I probably run it around every 50 hrs+.  Havn't had any problems, and yes pro digital is the bomb for repairs, good work, good service, and quick turn around times.
