I want to know the best battery to get for a SD722. I read the posts on here and see a lot about a sony sony NPF970 6600. I would like to find one that will run me a hole show and some. One other thing how many battreys do you think I would need to tape mule on nye at 24/96.


When I saw that bean made one with rc batterys. I got to thinking that the pro most have a way to power 7xx rec that most last longer then a sony battery and found this it looks like a way to power a 722. I did a search on here and did not see any info on it. It is called a Battery Bud and made by Cable Techniques. It works with the NP-1 type battery.

I would go with batterybank for the sheer fact their batteries are almost guaranteed to be fresher, and ive been 1 for 3 on buying batts on ebay, whereas, buying from SS or BB i have been golden

oh and running Phantom ON/Writing to the INHDD/Backlight OFF/headphones ON

I can get about 1 hr per mah, so out of a 6000mah battery, I can get about 6 hrs, so i would day 5 max to be safe

I dont trust the sony-style batts anymore, I had a brand new one be fine one day and almost dead the next charge then another went down the same way

when you dont expect it, BAM, dead batt at a show=NOT COOL

i have never owned eitehr of these so i have no clue

you HAVE TO run the 722/744/702 withe the sony L or M series camcorder batteries or wire up an external powering method thru the dummy cell and the battery output, it could be done with much lighter batteries, but i already had these.......

By the Cable Techniques  BB-NXL4M-12 | 12" cable or BB-NXL4M-36 | 36" cable  which is a  4-Pin XLR Male to Hirose cable. Then get an eco-charge EC-90. After power runs out on the eco it will then switch to the battery on back of the 722. This is a festival solution! Start deck in morning and run all day.

I still think my method is easier to deal with. NIMH RC batts can be charged quickly, i have 3 x 3000mah packs wired in parallel so i essentially have 9000mah packs, but i charge them all individually, it takes about 2 hrs or so per 3000mah pack, so in 6-8 hrs i can have the whole pack recharged, and you can get chargers that will charge all 3 in 3 hrs, so NIMH can be chaged ALOT quicker than SLA's and also last more cycles and is lighter

my .02 - unless you are gonna be doing festivals or events where you will need a ton of battery life - I personally think that the onboard L-Series batteries are the way to go - i got one bad genuine battery off of eBay that wouldn't take a charge, but other than that I have had no issues with the camcorder batteries. most of the problems that others incurred with the generic batteries were due to the connecting pin coming loose when removing the battery which was more of an annoyance, but other than that it seems to me that both the genuine sonys and the generic versions have been very reliable. carry 1 spare with you for your average club show and you are still capable of 10+ hours and carrying less weight than SLAs or the NiMH RC batteries. the huge advantage for Bean going with that external rig was that he already owned a large number of the RC batteries as well as the chargers - IME I had a ton of issues with the RC packs failing or not holding a proper charge when I was running them.

i got my 722 for down on the farm back in nov.  i used it that weekend and let joey(athiker, not sure if he's on this board) take it, and he still has it.  he got one in ATL. to use.  he's since gotten his own 722 and bought two more of these batts for himself.  he hasn't had any problems.  i personally have no experience with these batts yet.

I went the dummy battery route as well after some flakey cam corder batts.  Picked up the Sony dummy sled and 4 each 7V 4000 mah lion batts from batteryspace.com and built a pack to power the V3 and the 722.  I ditched my walmart lions, and store the new lions in a pelican.  Works rather nicely, IMO.

The batteries I got were $27 a piece.  I bought the same charger that Fozzy showed in his thread for $100.  The dummy cell can be had for $5 to $40 on ebay dependent upon how patient you are.

Here are some crappy pics of my power setup.  I've got 4 each 4000 mah lion batteries from batteryspace.com.  They are run in parallel for a total of 16000 mah.  I run a Sony dummy cell batt to the 722 and a modified Leegeddy RA V3 power cord to power both devices.  Much thanks to Fozzy for the idea and the help.

My dummy cell is powered by 3 x 3000mah 7.2v NIMH RC batts wired in papallel so I essentially have a 7.2v 9000mah NIMH battery, but its no 16,000mah battery

It works quite well.  Not as protective as the Lowpro bags, but I like the functionality and moisture flaps.  I use the 4 shelf and have 2 accessory bags, fwiw.

I'm going to use it all the time.  It's similar to Fozzy's setup in that I won't have to mess with recharging after every show.  Most of the stuff I record is only a couple hours, so I can go many shows without recharging.  I haven't measured the pelican with the batts, but batteryspace.com says the batts are 7 oz./each.  Pelican's site says the case is 0.7 lb's.  So it's just under 2 1/2 lbs. total.

I haven't done extensive testing with the power setup yet, so I can't answer the battery meter question.  I need to play around with it a bit.

i bet the batt meter still works fairly good. it works fine on my external setup
