LOM mics
« on: November 08, 2018, 05:46:06 PM »
cross posting this from another thread. What I hear doesn't sound bad, I hope that some folks can give some of these a try and let us know what they think

Has anyone tried LOM mic's?  A friend said he ordered a pair of omni mic's - mostly for ambient sound."

noted this statement, too , hope some of our members (Euros?) can give these a try

Quality
All LOM instruments are assembled, checked for quality and packed in Bratislava, Slovakia, either by us or by robots. Uši capsules and cabling are made in Japan. We use high-quality, long-lasting, gold-plated Neutrik connectors made in Lichtenstein. We generally try to avoid third-world sourced manufacturing, whereever possible.

I'm a fan of what Jonas is doing with LOM. It's fun to see him working through product and artistic ideas on his Instagram accounts: @lomlabel & @jonas.gruska.

I've got a pair of the original non-modular Usi Pros (XLR, phantom, EM172 capsule) and a pair of the tiny mikroUsi (1/8" stereo, PiP). I bought them to use for field recording. They sound pretty good to my ears though I don't have high-end mics to compare them to. The mikroUsi mics are a little fragile; on their first outing (a week long trip around Israel) I managed to pull the cables slightly away from the mic bodies while putting on windscreens. They still work properly.

Nothing online from them at the moment; if I've got time next week I'll try to put something up.

I've also been using his Elektrosluch 3 and Priezor instruments, which are a lot of fun.

The sample sounds nice and the build quality looks top notch ... I'm not too sure about the 115SPL though. If they can handle the 4.7k MOD these could be a nice/inexpensive alternative to the B3's.

Hey guys,

Jonas from LOM here. Thanks for all the kind words!

The mikroUsi mics are a little fragile; on their first outing (a week long trip around Israel) I managed to pull the cables slightly away from the mic bodies while putting on windscreens. They still work properly.

I'd be happy to send you a replacement pair! My main goal is to make you happy :)

Let me know if you have any questions!

Many of us may wonder, what would be costs for shipping to USA and do you take PayPal?

Jonas, very kind of you but not necessary. I am happy. Mics work perfectly well still; it's just cosmetic. I've learned to place the windscreens on more gently.

A recording from that Israel trip with the mikroUsi of a nun sweeping the floor at the Church of the Multiplication:

https://soundcloud.com/user-202317372/nun-sweeping-mosaic-floor-tabgha-israel

The mics were clipped to either side of my backpack, the bag was set on the floor, and the recorder is a D100. The nun was ~10' feet away. As I recall it was only the nun and I in the church during this minute or so. The background voices were drifting in from the courtyard. This won't help those rock n' roll tapers, but hopefully is a useful sample of how the mics sound in a quiet space.

Amazing. I found that very relaxing, and honestly, a beautiful recording. I could almost transport myself there and see the Nun sweeping. Beautiful job.

I agree, I am very tempted to pick up a set and have the 4.7k mod done.

Really nice recording indeed :)

Many of us may wonder, what would be costs for shipping to USA and do you take PayPal?

We accept PayPal and shipping to US depends on the weight of the package, but for basic set of mics it should be 10€ for 1st class tracked postage.
The prices are listed without tax and you may be asked to pay the tax when receiving the mics.

Mrkva,

It appears to me that all of your mics are omnis (if I missed something I apologize in advance as I'm reading the site from my phone).  Are they intended for diffuse field or free field use?

Also, are you familiar with the 4.7k mod that's been mentioned in this thread?  If so, would you consider offering it in your mics?

This recording of a Bar Mitzvah proceeding through the streets of Tzfat I am 95% sure was also made with the mikroUsis into my D100. It gives a sense of how they fare with louder sources. Again, clipped to the side of my backpack. The picture gives a sense of the space and where the mics were in relation to the musicians.

+1. I would be VERY INTERESTED.
