AT4041 Opinions...
« on: December 13, 2003, 06:19:08 AM »
I'm in the process of downloading a couple AT4041 sourced shows from the archive, but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask if anyone has had experience running these mics....do they sound similar to the 4051s (I really enjoyed chris' philly phish tape btw)....how do they compare to the oktavas that i currently run...

thanks for any input

matt

the sonic quality's of the 4041's i believe from looking at the spec sheet compared to the 4051a's is that the 41's dont have interchangable caps and the max spl and dynamic range are bit less than the 51's, i would think they would sound fairly good, but never hearing a pur 41 tape i cant give real world experience with the mics, let us now how they sound, and thanks for the compliment on the tape, i thought it came out pretty good although trey is rather bright in the mix, what can you do

the 4041's are a really nice intro set of mics.  they sound significantly better than the oktava's.  i use them a lot on acoustic guitars and overheads in the studio.

Yea, I'd agree with Jonny.  I think the 4041s are very nice beginner mics.  They don't get much use in taping circles, but they've got a pretty good sound.  I also like them better than the octavas--tighter bass, nice detail in the mids and highs, though they are a bit on the bright side due to the presence peak in their response.

I ran them for almost a year, first set of full size mics after doing the core sounds and sound professional stealth mics.  I never ran them with an outboard pre, just line transformers and phantom power sent into the line in of my ancient Aiwa brick (like the Marantz).  I would recommend them for the price, which is only like $375 new for the pair, assuming you're looking for fixed cardioid starter mics.

yes, the 4900 series SD mics from audio technica are certainly colored on the bright side, but with a an either dark pre or a/d and a nice detail, like the two setups ive gone through with these mics v2>modsbm1/ad500e, brings the highs down, the mids and bass up and proves for a very detailed and solid regarding, just throwing my AT .02 there, hope you enjoy the mics and great for the price, now i just ahve to get the hyper and omni caps for my 4900 bodies to compliment the 51 card
