Newbie asks: Oktava MK012s or AT831b's?
« on: December 23, 2003, 08:16:37 PM »
I have a pair of Oktavas and a pair of AT831s, which I bought for uses other than taping concerts. I'm a newcomer to live taping.

Which would be likely to produce better concert tapes? Can someone describe the character of the two?

I'll be running them into a UA5 and a DAP1, both of which I've just bought.

Thanks!

I have both.  I've run both with the UA-5.  I like the results from both, but  I'd suggest running each for a show or two and letting your ears decide.

Or of course you could put the Oktavas in with XLRs and the ATs through the RCAs and run a 4-mic mix.  Just tried that one for the first time recently and the result was pretty decent.

Is your UA-5 warm- or presence-modded? Or stock?

as an oktava user i'd vote for the oktavas.  do you have a mod on your ua-5?  i think a p-mod would go best with the oktavas to tighten up the loose low end.
of course i don't know much about the at's...what pickup pattern are they and are they switchable like the mc012's?
also, what caps do you have for the mc012's?  are they matched?  where did you get them from?
i think all of these are factors...
personally i have the full matched set from the sound room and really like them.  i typically run cards DIN but have also ran hypers pointed-at-stacks and DIN and have been happy with the results.  the hypers are very nice.  i haven't had a chance to run the omni's yet but hopefully in the summer i will give them a test run.
by the way i run mine into a usbpre which has basically the same pre as the mp-2.

I have cards, just standard Guitar Center issue. The AT831s are cards also.

The only mod on my UA-5 is a home digi-mod.

those at831 are the mini mics, i just realized that...
for one, the oktavas have an extended frequency response over the at831's.  i think you'd be better off using the oktavas in a taper's section setting, but the 831's would be nice for stealthing.

you're lucky in that you already have both sets, give them both a try at your next show and compare the results!

he has a presence modded UA-5

how is the end of the AT831s terminated? (xlr, mini, lemo?)

If you are going to be doing any stealth work, go with the the ATs.  It'd be funny to see these little guys on a stand, but they'd work well there too.  I'd put them up against any other mic in it's price range.

If you own both, have fun with testing them!

I used to have Oktavas and AT933s (very similar mini mic to yours). I liked the Oktavas and think they sounded just a little nicer, but ended up selling them off. The quality of both sets of mics was pretty close but for the small size of the ATs just made them more convenient for the small club type stuff I do. Keep 'em both if you can, or keep the Oktavas if it's all tapers section stuff or the ATs if it's small club stuff.

i would go with the octavas for open taping and the at831s for stealth work
certain death, small chance of success, what are we waiting for?

I've run hypers and cards for both the MC012s and the SP AT933s and IMO the MC012s blew the AT933s out of the water (for open taping).  The 933s in comparison just sounded...canned.  The MC012s opened up the sound a lot IME - better detail across the board, more extended high end, fuller, more robust low end, smoother mids, etc.

That's very helpful, Brian. If I'd had to guess at how they would compare, based on other, non-stereo uses of both, your description is about what I would have said.

Glad it helped - but keep in mind I was using the Sound Professional's models, distinctly different from the stock AT mics.  I have no experience with the stock ATs so can't speak to them.  Were you looking at the stock 831bs or the SP version?
