Title: R44 external power
Post by: vegeta_ban on April 23, 2011, 12:32:41 AM
Right now i am using rc batteries, like the UA5 would be powered, the last couple of shows they have died on me, i think i have over used the batteries. What's a good replacement for these to keep the rig going. Or should i just buy a couple of new ones of these???

Most of us use the dvd batteries. You just need to make sure that you use the right type of battery cable with them because the R-44 is negative polarity. I have a hot-swap cable (two inputs on the battery end) I don't use anymore, but I need my dvd batteries. If you end up going this way and you're looking for the cable just give me a shout.

Yes, they do. Walmart.com also. If you check the retail or battery forums here you most likely will find links to various places selling them also.

I totally agree with myco, dvd batteries are excellent along with the cable that comes with it or the radio shack adaptaplug with the M tip.
The only concern you may have with DVD batteries is their price. They used to be pretty affordable at $12-24 a battery but I've seen them as high as $50-70 on ebay (where I bought mine); if the price is still that high, you may want to consider a different battery method.

Good luck

Tekkeons are a bit pricey, but they'll work too.

I have one to use for the 5V option.  Haven't had it long enough to make subjective evaluation.  I have seen some reports about them causing noise if run too close to recording gear but have not verified it.  Had a discussion with a friend who has one.  He said it does creat noise but the noise is down in the microphone self noise area so I don't think that really counts.

5V-9V-12V DC Rechargeable CCTV Li-ion battery powering stock SBM1 Line In  (5V USB)

Got the exact same spikes on the Grace V3 using all three voltages with microphones.  This was the battery that made me search for a non-regulator solution for my V3:  http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=145088.0 (http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=145088.0)

My old SLA and "Wally (BPD-8000)" did not produce spikes.  Nor does my new LiFePO4.

Is it audible ??  Certainly not in a live recording.  My eyes are telling me that the battery's regulator is adding noise to the analog section.  I don't want my battery doing that.

I've since switched the connector on the cord for the V3.  I'd need to make an adapter again to replicate the results.  It was very visible on the V3.

So back to topic... not all battery solutions are equal.  Completely draining you're RC batts is dangerous and shortens their lifespan.

A small Sealed Lead Acid batt is my "budget" fallback.  Local BatteryPlus or RC Hobby store could help you out.

9v should do it.  unless your batter drops voltage as it goes... then i would start it off at 12v.

Sorry to ask a newb question but if I were to run stereox1, no phantom, what could I expect as a current draw (ma) with AKG's? I am trying to find the info., but I haven't had any luck. My main concern is having adequate batteries for the upcoming festy season where I will be running only one pair of mics for most of the time through a preamp and analog in.

Sounds like a question for TGakidis.

Thanks Andy, Ted has been summarily paged....

I know that my 460's draw 1ma which is fuel-efficient as far as mics go, but I wish the manuals would give more detailed info on stuff like this.

What type of external power source are you thinking? Regardless, don't forget reverse polarity for cables. Our cable builders know this. With 2 sets of mics on phantom, including 460s and power hog STOs, I've found a 5400mAh DVD battery will still have >~80% left after a two band 4hr show.

My battery situation is the typical collection of DVDs and Tekkeons. I am basically hoping to be able to run the deck for at least 12-15 hours.

Yep, those are the type of numbers I am seeing, and 4-5 hours seems to be the average with running 4-channel, and all variations of such. This is great news for the individual shows, especially with dual cables.

FWIW, I regularly get 6-8 hours from a 5400mAh DVD battery running 4 channels of phantom (including a pair of LDC's) on my R-44.  YMMV.

Just FYI, and nothing extremely scientific...

Well I am doing some battery tests running stereoX1 (akg460`s <1ma per), 24/48, no phantom, all lights and features on. I burned through the first dvd battery (5400mah) in @ 11 hrs. This gives me a rough calculation of @ 490ma power draw. With the dual dvd system in place I went through a 16 gb card (16hrs) with no problem, and I have inserted another 16gb card to see how long this will actually go. I am down 1 green light on the 2nd battery, and I have been running for 3 hrs thus far. These results are very encouraging, and means that festival season is covered.

Do these M-tip & B-tip plugs from radio shack solve the reverse polarity issue for powering the R-44 or do I need to get a custom cable ?

Those tip cables from ratshack work because there is a polarity mark in the cable and a pin mark on the tip, so you just have to attach them accordingly...
