Cabridge audio DVD-A check it out
« on: February 25, 2004, 07:16:54 AM »
I'm reading some raves about this on an other forum.
http://www.cambridge-audio.co.uk/noflash/540d_dvd.html

It outputs 24/96 or 24/192 via digi from DVD-A, as long as there are no copy protection flags on the disc.

Under $500, brand new.
hmmm......

I know their CD players are highly regarded as a killer budget deck that sounds very high-end.  I would expect the same from this.

I like it for the 24/96 transport option alone.  DVD - V playback is just a bonus!

:-)  ive got one of those 5 disc dvd changers, a superslim made by panasonic- the thing is awful.  the sound out of it is pretty terrible combined with a really slow ass motor in the chassis to switch discs.  There are days when I want to throw it out the window.

Any one try one of these yet?

Any idea how they compare with the Toshiba w.r.t. sound at the analog outs?

NorthHamptonAudio has them for $329.

not I, but it is in the plan for my future player.  Its the ability to act as a DVD-A transport for a better sounding external 24/96 DAC that interests me.

thats my interest too.  I was originally looking at the CAL CL-20 because it does 96/24 out, but those are no longer made and I wouldn't mind having a new transport.  The CL-20 got really amazing reviews as a red-book playback option.  But a 192 capable unit seems like the best way to go now.

I can't find anyone with firsthand experience so I guess I'm just going to have to be the early adopter this time.

i didn't think that 24/192 was supported over spdif or by AES for that matter.  i was under the impression only up to 24/96?

I thought 192 was capable via some sort of dual-AES.

it depends on the player, playa.  the 540d has coax digital output but not AES.  it has a "scart" socket, wtf is that?  so maybe there is only 24/96 output.  Thats not a problem for me.

I have one of their budget CD players (D300) that I bought about six years ago.  It is already the longest-lasting CD player I have ever bought.  Thin sound and prominent high end.  I will probably purchase a Benchmark or MSB A/D one day so hopefully that will be taken care of.

One thing to know about the Cambridge models if you are thinking of replacing your CD player with their DVD player is to check whether it can play DAO discs.  Original models of the Cambridge Audio CD and DVD players could not; you may have to specifically ask the salesman about that.
