TC electonic "Konnect8" and "Konnect24" firewire interfaces?
« on: January 22, 2007, 12:18:47 AM »
I saw someone with a "TC Electronic" interface.

There are two varieties, Konnect8 (2 mic/line input) and Konnect24 (2 mic, 2 line).

They appear to have *standalone operation*.  Also, ADAT, which looks cool.

Here is the user manual:

I started a thread on these pre-release... decided to dial back my investment for the moment and I didn't get one (I was specifically eyeing the konnekt8) but I think I may yet go that route when I step up from the M-AudioFTP.  They handle dc power or power via firewire, too, which is nice.

Here's the original thread:

Update:
Had some time with Google this am:

Detailed review that I haven't begun to get all the way through. The pics at the beginning are great, and it includes one of the guts! (http://acapella.harmony-central.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=213970&d=1163451764)

This makes me happy.  From the Harmony Central link you posted.

So why is stand-alone mode useful? Well, TC probably had loftier apps in mind  but I like being able to run the optical  SPDIF from my CD player into the digital in

Also the fluffing of the pres is mighty nice too.  This unit is looking good.

Also sounds like the A/D stage is pro level as well.  A weak point in lots of the other smaller multi-tracking boxes.

I saw one guy on gearslutz who wasn't thrilled with the pres. He went mini-me > konnekt 8/24 (not sure which he had.)

Interesting choice on his part but, pre-amp reviews can be very subjective once you get past the pure numbers.

I guess I would like to know about the circuit itself: Is it an opamp or discrete front end.  (or something like INA103, etc).  What are the supply voltages (+/-12 or 15V or something cheapo like +/-5V that Edirol uses).  That kind of stuff.

TC E. makes much hype about the pres and the a/d stages being proprietary and hot shit. I can't find any detail about them, really. (other than published specs.)

this is a nice detail though:
Quote
Those who saw the Onyx Satellite Pro Review may recall that one of the issues was phantom power being only 38V, so I measured the phantom power on the 24D when bus-powered: +49.1V on the nose, with no difference when using the AC adapter instead of bus power.

All I have to see is a closeup picture of the pres and a voltmeter and I could figure that out  :).  It is not rocket science.

For you.
I don't own a voltmeter.
I thought it was nice to see that someone had already taken the time to measure it.

Thanks for the links, Chris.  Certainly impressive build quality, and I suspect great circuitry too.  I was reading that link waiting for a zoom-in on the preamp stage, but it did not happen.  Those guys do get great marks for showing the innards though.  Far and above what the usual reviewers do.

Well, many kind folks here have given me close ups of various stuff (Edirol R09, various pres, mic innards, etc).  If anyone ever gets one of these, feel free to take some photos.

Thanks!

You will not be disappointed, the built in effects might be a waste of time for you guys but, I assure you the sound quality will be top notch. I know of more then one mastering studio that has used the Finalizer product made by T.C as the final A-D converter for many a studio project to to mention there multiband compression. They make a good product.

Anyone have thoughts on how these interfaces stack up compared with the MOTU (UltraLite/Traveler) and RME (Fireface400/800) gear, other than the obvious stuff like #'s of pre's, ins/outs, etc?  More interested in sound quality, stability, etc. Not serious yet but thinking..

After what I've read recently in Grateful Dead Gear about TC Electronic, I'm sold on this company;s pedigree. They definitely seem to be the real deal. I have done some drooling over their guitar gear of late, as well. (Though, as I'm primarily an acoustic player, I've no actual need.)

I think I'll be buying the konnekt8.

I'd like to hear some sort of comp with the FastTrack Pro if that's possible.  I'm very interested to hear this box.  It's so appealing to me.

I know that this is a really stupid question but I noticed that there is only 1 phantom power button.

Does that mean it can only power 1 condenser mic?  Or does that turn phantom on for both ports?

Not a stupid question.
The single button activates it for both ports. It's a fairly common thing until you get above the prosumer market...

Here's a little sample.
Recorded as follows:
Guitar mic'd with Superlux SMK-H8K cards > TC Electronic Konnekt8 > FW > Laptop > Reaper @ 24/96
Gain knobs vertical ~50% of available.

This clip is brief and, it turns out that I could have gone higher with the gain but it's clean...

I'll run some more soon and I'll see about those pictures, too.

I'm really curious to see how this performs as a standalone at a proper concert. The price of the Konnekt 8 and a Hosa ODL-276 would be worth it.

Doesn't the Microtracker (mentioned in your sig) take coax s/pdif? If so, with the MT you wouldn't need the HOSA.

That's one config I'm going to try this afternoon. konnekt8 > hosa odl-276 > jb3 @ 48/16
I don't have a spare battery for the konnekt8 yet so it'll still be on the wallwart but that should test the settings recall.

You, sir, are right. It is coax. I failed to see that in your lineage. Thanks for correcting me. All the better, potentially. Here's to hoping it comes out well.
