Pre to go with ADK LE's
« on: October 19, 2003, 03:40:46 PM »
Right now I've got the LE's going to an ad-20 and it sounds good...but I think a really nice pre behind these will make them sound even better.  Ideally a V3 would be best but my pockets aren't that deep.  Any ideas or thoughts?  MokE? Jason B?

I'd guess a ua5 with whatever mod best suits your tastes, warm or presence.

Mike I was hoping you'd jump in on this! :)   My thought is either a used V2 or a presance mod ua-5.  I feel like and warm sounding pre (apogee, mp2 etc) is not the way to go.  Mike....why do YOU run the V3 and not a minime?  Maybe it'll help me figure out what I'm after. :D

Thanks Mike....A and C were what I was hoping for.  The ADKs sound really natural themselves and hopefully I can scrounge up the $$ for one of the above pre's.....a V3, short of winning the lottery, is out of the question!   V2......my new goal! :P

While I think the v2 would sound nice with the LE's, I don't know that it would rid you of that ad20 sound - detailed, yet thin and a bit bright.  You'd have to move to a different a/d converter, so the cost of a new pre & a/d would push you near that of a v3.  I've been running a warm mod ua5 with my A51TL's for some time now and I've been very happy with it.  I had a presence mod for awhile and thought it sounded too bright with the TL's.

Go with the mod ua5, save your pennies, then sell it to move up to a v3 when you can.

The setup would be:

ADKs -> V2 -> d7....no a/d in there other than the d7s a/d.    I was pleased when I was running 393s->mp2->d7 so I imagine I'd be really happy with the adk/v2 combo.   You think the a/d is critical??

I just saw a used v2 for $575 - a great deal btw.  Still, for less $, I'd recommend ADK> (warm or presence) mod-ua5> d7.  I've run v2>d7 a few times when my apogee was in the shop or I needed to go small and it doesn't sound nearly as nice as v2> hq a/d or even v2> dap1 or m1.  Is it "critical"?  No, you'd still hear some benefit over the ad20, but I think you'd really be limiting the performance of the v2 by running it through the d7's a/d.

some TL>wmod for download on Archive.org.

http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=4583

Here's a Kimock show I recorded earlier this year with the TL>wmod-ua5 rig.  There are a few other sources on Archive to compare (Soundfield, Schoeps).

Another TL>wmod-ua5 - Will Bernard/Motherbug.

I have a dmod UA-5 (digi mod done by me, no pre mods) that I'm not using right now if you want to play with it for a little while.  You'd have to come up with a battery, though.

Let me know, I wouldn't mind parting with it for a month or so.

I used to run LE > V2 > AD1k, I ran V2 > D8 once before I got my batteries for my AD1k. If you want to hear how they sound let me know. I would recomend a presence mod UA-5 though, I think it would tighten up the low end a bit.

Sorry to jump in on this so late Brian, but I really like the way the V2 sounds with the TL's. I have a MMe behind that, that may warm up the sound a bit, bit I really think the V2 is an excellent pre with these mics. If I were in your position, I would be looking for a used V2.

I could B&P you some tapes if you would like.

Really? You think the low end of the TL's was loose with the V2? Hmph. I have never heard that in my tapes. I always thought that the V2 tightened up the bass significantly. Goes to show you that no 2 people here the same thing the same way.

That's what I was thinking...that the V2 would tighten up the bottom end....I guess a p-mod ua-5 would do about the same as well?

Thanks again Jason and +T for the offer!

got's plenty of A51 SLE>V2>DAP1 tapes here as well as a bunch from after i got the ad1000 that would (obviously) br A51SLE>V2>AD1000>P1.   I really like the LE>v2 combo.  I'd be happy to shoot some shows over for your perusal...

I absolutely agree that the ADK>V2 makes a great combo, but just realize he's going into a D7, not an outboard a/d, not a DAP1, not even an M1.  The a/d in the D7 will absolutely kill that natural clear extended high end of the V2.  If you can sell the D7 and pick up one of the other DATs I mentioned, go for it, but it seems you'll have close to $1k invested.  At that point, I'd just tell you to save up for a few more months until you can get the V3.

If one of your goals is to "tighten up" the low end, the p-mod will definitely help - probably more than the V2.  The p-mod sounds tight, fast, and dynamic, with outstanding clarity.  It doesn't sound as full in the low end as the V2, nor does it compare with the natural and extended highs of the V2.

It all adds up to more $$.    Over the last 24hrs or so I think a mod ua-5 is the way to go for me.   Something I can grow into a bit and if, down the road, I want to add the V2 I can and still have the ua-5s a/d.   :)   Thanks and +T to all in the thread!

Wow....+t Craig. This Kimock tape sounds great. I can seee why the P-Mod UA-5 would probably be a bit much in the top. I'd definitely say this is the way to go Brian.
