Alex:

I've done both 3 and 4 mic mixes. I think the first thing that must be answered is HOW do intend on doing the mix? Post mix or during using a real mixer??

I think the thing to realize is there is no magic bullet. I end up listening to my mix and I'm never quite using the same mix night after night. You MUST listen to the mix to determine what the right amount of "mix" is from each mic.

Hope this helps. If you have specific questions, I'll be happy to answer those.

Thanks for responding Wayne, Ya I intend to do it on the spot with a mixer, thats why Im kind of nervious. I want to try it because Im going to be at a nice sounding outdoor venue with a HUGE crowd, so I think it will be nice to get some "room" with the omni, also I think it will help give me nicer bass.

The venue is a huge concert field w/ a permanate stage owned by the county that they host free concerts at every sunday night in the summer. The crowds are always GIGANTIC, DTB had probably 10,000+ easyly, Blues traveler 15,000+. Last time I taped there I ran din, but you couldn't hear the roar of this giaganitc crowd, so I think havin that omni would help pick that up. I just wanted to see if anybody more experenced had any general tips. I just wanted to know if putting too much omni will diminish the stereo, If it is not uncommon to have as much omni as cards, ect... stuff like that.

To be honest there isn't any real set way other than experiment with it a bit. However, that said I typically run my setup like this:

EW SR-77s (-30 db)
EW QTC-1s (-40 db)

So as you can see the Omnis are 10 dB down to start with, then usually they end up getting pushed down a bit more in the mix. The purpose of the omnis is to get that nice bass and feeling of "being there" without losing the focus that you get with cards.

BTW, what mixer are you using?

One word of caution. Watch for phasing. Even as often as I run a 4 mic setup I get bit by it too! Tend to happen more when there is any wind around. I have never had this problem indoors, only outdoors.
