Title: Mic for a sony vx-2100 camcorder ?
Post by: silentmark on September 07, 2004, 09:46:46 AM
A friend is using a sony vx-2100 camcorder and he asked me what would be a good mic to plug into it. I don't know anything about camcorders, so any one out there with any ideas ? He told me price is no object ...

well an AT822 single point stereo mic is good. I have herd some very good recordings from that. and also Sony ECM-717, Sony ECM-ZS90 (very good but not as good as AT822) you can buy all the sony's at www.aaaprice.com very cheap for what they usually go for.

or any of these:

the 2nd link has probably the closest sound to how the AT822 sounds.

I just purchased the Sony MS908C mic for my VX-2100, and it sounds good, but I still need to figure out where the set the peaks for the manual recording level input -- I recorded one show and didn't have the levels peaking very high because I didn't want overblown sound, but during playback, the audio is noticeably low.

At another show, I tried increasing the peak levels almost to the point of going into the red, and it seems to sound better.

I have a friend who purchased a mic similar to the one in the second link above and his also sounds very good, but if I'm not mistaken, that's a mono mic -- I had to split his audio into 2 channels for pseudo-stereo when I transferred one of his videos to DVD on my computer, because there was only one channel.

Along that same path, Mark, you might want to recommend not only a mic but a SVU-1 for levels as well.

I think an AT822 would do a great job, and you could probably find one for cheap.

BTW, nice avatar :P

I used this in combination with a panasonic camcorder and I got unexpected great results while filming a rock concert - it was RUSH. the only problem I see is that these kind of mics ( so does AT822, very big sized ) doubles the size of your setup. in fact the mics including the connector shoe is almost as big as the camcorder itself  ;)

maybe you might try this one -> http://www.audio-technica.com/guide/line/atr/ATR25.html

good luck ...
