audio magic cables
« on: December 16, 2004, 03:22:52 AM »
how stiff are these cables? (ha ha stiff... ;D) from the couple pictures i've seen, they look like they could be a pain compared to either canare or kind kables. any personal thoughts? i'm trying to convince myself audio magic's are worth the price, but i don't think i want to deal with the hassle of unwinding them when i'm rushed

depends on which one's you're referring too.  the xstreams are thicker than canare, but workable, and warm, after they've got some hours on them.  the hypers are pretty tightly coiled and have a strong memory.  but when coiled, are small and light.

not terribly stiff, and as good as they are, a little overhyped imho.

depends on your needs...for the price, size and smooth sound of the hyperconductors in my gear bag...nothing touches them

indeed, i was thinking of the excallibur I, II, Sorcerers, etc.  There are a lot of other great cable makers out there that often go neglected around here just because am has made such a name for themselves.

thinking about $150-200 for the pair...pretty much on par with the XStreams

I would look at the hyperconductors...you can get a custom set for under your $150 number and they are really nice sounding....

edited to add, I can guarantee you they sound sweet with the MGs :)

you can also get a set of www.bettercables.com cables (no right angles though).  Stiff cables but wonderful sounding.

Agreed. I have found that these cables tend to lose a bit of their "memory" after some hours of use. Still need to coil 'em properly, but for the size, the price, and the option to have AM make them custom, it's a no-brainer. Oh, and they sound sweet, too.

like i said, not bad cables, just a little overhyped.  there are a number of other cable manufacturers that aren't even explored here who make super high fi cables.  audiomagic has just done a nice job of marketing themselves to our community.

hyped yes, overhyped, not in my opinion.  since they're really only available from one retailer, i think it shows how well they perform by the fact that you see so many pairs out there.
