HOSA 276/312 power/mods
« on: April 22, 2004, 11:06:02 AM »
I have a HOSA 276 on order and had a few questions I couldn't find answers for after doing some searching/browsing.

First: Most people seem to be hacking the wall wart. I realize there is a bit of sadistic pleasure to be gained from this, but is a RS multiplug kit out of the question? Isn't there an adaptor that could be built to power this like the UA5? I'd like to keep my Wall Wart in case I ever need to Ebay it.

Second: Would it be possible to solder jumpers from the coax in to the coax out before the signal conversion? I've seen one picture of this things guts and it didn't look too messy. The same thing would be nice to do post conversion for two optical outs, but this would weaken the signal right?

[1] Yeah, there's probably a RS adaptaplug that'll work, but I don't know which one.  Take your -276 to RS, find one that fits, and let us know which one!

[2] This would really be the same thing as putting a coax barrel splitter in front of the -276 or an optical splitter behind the -276.  And yes - in both cases, the signal would be weakened.

Bean - that's the thread I was talking about with the wall wart sacrafice. If I remember right, you had some problems with droputs if the power cord was moved. You later fixed this by redoing the connection and adding more tape? I'm hoping that with the RS adaptaplug kit, the wires will be thicker and I won't have to worry about dropouts if I just tin the tips and crimp it onto the factory crimps. I did this for my UA5, and haven't noticed any power flickering.

Brian - Yeah, basically I was thinking it would avoid having another barrel splitter to loose, and the connection would be a little better since it would be soldered. Do you think signal degradation would be worse in this case than using a barrel splitter? Whenever this thing comes in, I'll head up to RS and report back.

i took some tape off actually, i'll show you an updated pic if i can find my digicam

also, i am VERY anal about power dropouts, i shaked the hell out of the connections like a WORST case scenario

i took some tape off, and BAM, works like a charm, just have a lil tape on the crimp connection, and some right behind the leads on the rc leads
