9V with Lunatec V2
« on: May 27, 2008, 02:49:32 PM »
Is it possible to power a V2 off one of those Walmart/DVD 9V batteries? Or does the V2 only take 6V safely?

i recommend this battery if 9v is good for you.  i powered my mini mp and hd-p2 for 7 hours off of one charge.

you can run a v-2 off of 9 volts, you just have to wire the 4 pin xlr for 6 volt.
if you need a power cable i can make one for you.
happy taping

  • can you fix it in the mix?

No problems, but the V2 will dissapate that extra voltage in the form of heat on the outside of the unit. It will run slightly warmer overall too. I don't think this has any effect since if you power it with 12v it will do the same thing, but there is an internal jumper to switch the voltage and the pins are different. Call Grace to be sure, they will happily answer your questions.
Cheers,Phil

a while back, I put together a 7v NiMH battery pack for a friend's V2, and I had a little exchange with the nice people at Grace.  It should be the same thing for 9V.

Hi Jason,
Pin 3=+6v and pin 2=ground is correct. Most of the NiMH battery packs I've seen have some sort of LED monitoring for power level, so the low power/shutoff should not be a big deal. We are looking at some NiMH packs to offer for V2 and V3 operation. What system are you using?

Thanks for choosing Grace!

    Hello -
I have a quick question about the pin connections for a V2 power
cable.  My V2 is configured for 6V power.  I am planning on making a
new power cable to run the V2 from a NiMH 7.2 V battery.  I realize
that the auto-shutoff feature will no longer function as intended, but
I always keep close tabs on my battery power anyway, so that isn't a
big deal for me.  My question is in regards to how the 4-pin cable
should be wired?  The manual says for 6V operation pin 3 = +6 and pin
    2 = ground.  but for 12V operation, pin 4 = +12 and pin 1 is ground.
Because my V2 is calibrated for 6V operation, my guess is that I
should wire pin 3 hot and pin 2 ground, but I would like to confirm
    before I solder the cable.
    thanks,
    Jason Sobel

Thanks for the quick responses everyone. I was going to lend my battery to Zman so he could use it with his V2 at some upcoming shows, but neither of us knew if it would work.

With respect to 6V vs. 12V operation, Neal at Grace confirmed to me that you can run either voltage out of the box with no change in the box required. I didn't ask about 9V. They do have a pinout preference on the power cable, though I "think" that's intended as a convention more than a requirement (YMMV). I chose to follow it :)

From the manual:

POWER SUPPLY CONNECTIONS
A four pin XLR connector is used for the DC power input of the V2. The V2 can be ordered
to operate from either 6 or 12 Volt power sources. Pins 1 and 2 are ground and pins 3 and
4 are either 6 or 12V DC. To avoid compatibility problems it is recommended that 6 Volt
systems be wired to use pin 3 for hot (+6v) and pin 2 for ground while 12 Volt systems
should be wired to use pin 4 for hot (+12v) and pin 1 for ground.
The V2 current draw
ranges from .38A to .62A depending on the microphone used.

The only jumper changes associated with voltage levels are to let the front panel LED's know how to read battery levels accurately.
(Which is what Neal is referring to in the previous post with battery packs having their own LED's for monitoring battery level)
I didn't bother adjusting mine for this reason. The procedure is documented here:
