Speaker/ Room help...
« on: July 07, 2006, 04:00:42 PM »
So, I reccently re-arranged my playback room and digital audio workstation (DAW).
It had been set-up in the middle of my room, which was good for the sound, because I didn't have anything directly behind me or the speakers (Tannoy Reveals). Now, I have it set-up so the speakers are backed into a corner, and of course I have noticed a warm colouring to the mid-bass due to the boundry effect.

My questions...

Other than moving the DAW back into the middle of the room, how can I control the now obvious boundry effect the walls are having on my speakers? What room treatments actually work and are worth the money? The Reaveals have 6" woofers and are ported in the back. I have thought about trying to plug the port, but I'm not sure how that will affect the accuracy of the speakers? According to the manual, they do recommend pluging the port if you are running a sub-woofer. And, if I do plug the port, what can I use?

Anyway.. If you have real world experience here, I could use some advice...

I have an inexpensive pair of acoustic research bookshelf speakers that are ported in the rear

sounded too boomy, mid-bass was all sorts of sloppy, so I rolled up a sock and shoved it in the port.

worked wonders, cleaned up the midrange and midbass, removed all boominess

interesting.

chuck...
just for shits and giggles, if you've got  a standard cheap eggshell mattress pad, try that.
I have done this before as a junkyard room treatment, just to hear what, if any effect it might have on the echo in my living room.  I was surprised how well it worked.

that said, this company has great prices, though I do not know how well it "works" from direct experience...I'd certainly buy it myself.

I use auralex and real trap panels in my mixing/mastering room and also in my playback room. I didnt know a thing about room setup when I was getting my stuff together, but I picked the brains of a few guys such as Ethan Winer , Bob Katz, and others. Room treatment will have such a profound effect on your mixing/listening that you may very well begin to hate your recordings or speakers or others recordings that you previously loved. I had a nice pair of genelecs that I thought sounded amazing until I got my room treated. Afterwards, they sounded like absolute hell, so I ended up going through two more sets of speakers before being satisfied with my B+Ws.  All that from room treatment...

this forum: http://www.musicplayer.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum;f=26;hardset=0;start_point=0;DaysPrune=0 has a TON of info..Ethan is a real genius when it comes to acoustic treatment, and his products are very afforable. He is very good about responding to emails and can tell you more about acoustics than youd ever want to hear. He will get you squared away in no time, and wont push his products on you either..

Wow, lots of reading. Thanks Teddy.
I used the Room Mode Calculator from here: www.realtraps.com
It turns out I have major build ups at 282 Hz, 423 Hz and 565 Hz. My room is 12' x 10' x 8' which is actually a relatively good ratio.

I may try building a couple of bass traps out of insulation and hanging some decorative rugs and see how that works.
