Is it ok to go BB->preamp
« on: August 01, 2006, 12:05:10 AM »
Is it ok to go BB->preamp,  I have a preamp with bass roll off, but it only has one setting 100HZ TO 10 HZ which is too much roll off in many cases.  Is it ok to do this, also keep in mind that my pre-amp aslo fucntions as a battery box, giving 9V power.

My rig SP-CMC-8->(C/HC)->SP-SPSB-1->CA-ST-20A->Ihp-120

Simply put, I don't think that will work.

It may, or may not, cause damage to some piece of gear. But I've read other threads where people ran the same type of setup:

mics > battery box > preamp > recorder

and with that setup, the preamp was not providing gain. I'm not sure what the technical terms were, but basically, it didn't work for other people who tried the same type of setup (mics > bbox > preamp > recorder).

I'm sure Chris Church (and others) can chime in and provide further info than this.

Cool I will just use the pre with bass roll off and turn the bass it up later if I need to.

i used to run SP mics > SP BB > AD-20 > MD/JB3
no prob
however the ad-20 didn't give 9v power, only the BB did

i would PM chris--if you got the pre from the above ebay auction, then you bought it from him and he could give you an exact answer
Mics - AKG ck61/ck63 (c480b & Naiant actives), SP-BMC-2
XLR Cables - Silver Path w/Darktrain stubbies
Interconnect Cables - Dogstar (XLR), Darktrain (RCA > 1/8) (1/8 > 1/8), and Kind Kables (1/8f > 1/4)
Preamps - Naiant Littlebox & Tinybox
Recorders - PCM-M10 & DR-60D

You can run a battery box into my preamp no problem what so ever because the output of the bat box has a coupling cap it will just block all the voltage comming from my preamp. So yes go ahead and use the battery box infront of the preamp it will work fine.
So the signal chain would be Mics SP Bat Box CA-SP-20A Iriver
