iriver iHP-100: no plugin-power
« on: July 18, 2007, 10:21:16 AM »
my refurbished iHP-100 (with 10GB harddisk) doesn´t provide plugin-power when set to line-in with the latest rockbox-build for the H100-series from July 17th 2007.
purchased it for 72 € + shipping from roadpal (ebay-shop).
http://cgi.ebay.at/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300126600164

is the plugin-power controlled by rockbox or is the unit faulty or does the iHP-100 simply not have the plugin-power feature on it´s line-in?

the iHP-100 looks like the H120 with silver color...same dimensions and in/output connections (optical).

when using my 12V bbox all is fine though.

I also purchased the same unit from this seller and am having the same issue.  Works fine with a preamp or battery box.

I assumed they did based on the iriver Taper's FAQ where it states they supply 2.5v. However, I think you may be right since I see no rockbox setting to change the line-in to a mic-in.  If there is no way to change, how would the recorder know if you were using line or mic?

rockbox source: "line-in" = usually plugin-power for external mics.
with my H120 and H140 plugin-power was provided.

nevertheless I always use a bbox for powering my mics with 12V, so its not a big issue. ;)

perhaps all iHP-100 models DON´T support plugin-power.

roadpal just mailed me:
"hi,

you need to talk our engineer named "peter"

510-445-0188

thanks for your reply. "

could someone from U.S. call peter? I can´t call abroads with my company-cellphone.......

I agree it is not big deal, but I would still like to know if this is an issue with rockbox, a defective recorder, or a feature that the iHP-100 just doesn't have.  I did not test plug-in power prior to installing rockbox.

Rockbox has nothing to do with it, the plug power is always there (even if you select line-in in the original firmware! even if you never record anything with it!)

What I do not know is whether the iHP100 also has it...
(I just asked in our IRC channel)

I drive past Roadpal's place twice a day.  What do you want me to ask?  Whether the line-out puts off a 2.5V signal?

Wow.  On phone with PEter now.  Big time language barrier.  It actually sounds as if Peter is the translator for someone in the background.  BRB.

ask wether the iHP-100 line-IN(not line-out) provides plugin-power as the H120 and H140 does for powering mics with 2,5V.
thx

He said that it does.  I asked him what voltage it put out and he said he was not sure.  ::)  I would just suggest hacking a cable and grabbing your volt meter.  My guess is that if it is only 2.5V then it is not enough to drive your mics.

Edit to add: sorry that was not much help.  I tried.

it´s enough power to drive my mics BUT they sound better with 12V of course ;).
the unit simply doesn´t have plugin power...my guess. even the provided iriver-mic is dead when connected.....

Mine also came with an extermal mic..doesn't work.  I've read the iHP-100 Iriver manual and it does not mention Mic-In or mic power.  I think these units don't have mic power.

Ok, so here's the bad news: it seems the iHP100 does not provide plug power.

although the ihp-h100 does NOT provide plugin-power on line-in like the H120/140/320/340, power consumption is about 50-60% higher than with my former H140...both rockboxed.

the ihp100 can record about 4h15 with the SAME battery my H140 used to record between 8 and 10 hours?!?!

maybe simply a bad battery?? those models are old and maybe the battery has lost most of its power, even if the unit has not been used at all...

the ihp100 has poor battery because it has half the ram buffer of the H120.  Thus the HDD spins more often and whatnot...
