JB3 Apple/Linux support, revisited...
« on: December 22, 2003, 11:51:52 AM »
With OS X an Apple can run Linux/*BSD applications correct?

If so there might be a way to get your JB3 to talk to your apple ;D

Gnomad 2

Neutrino

Both seem to have limited JB3 support.  If anyone tries these out I'd love for you to post back with your findings as eventually I'd like to migrate to a Linux only box and this is one of the last stepping stones.

From nomadness.net:

Libnjb 1.0 and Gnomad 2.3.0 released
"The first "official" libnjb release, libnjb 1.0, has been reached.

This version supports Nomad Jukebox 1 (the original) almost 100% on Linux and BSD platforms. Partial (most important stuff) support for NJB2, 3, Zen, Zen USB 2.0, Zen NX and Zen Xtra is in it too.
Click here to go to the Libnjb homepage.

Gnomad is also up in a new release to keep in sync with libnjb

Actually more accurately, with any PowerPC Mac you could use Linux (there is some version of Linux that runs on all of them). But, out of the box Mac OS X is Mac OS X; not BSD, not Linux, simply Mac OS X. Now, Mac OS X has it's roots in BSD since NeXT had its roots in BSD, but really it's not true BSD (this is one of the points Apple is being sued by The Open Group over -- Apparently they believe that calling something UNIX like means they have to "approve" it and grant it a license).

To my knowledge nobody has tried porting the Linux code over to Mac OS X and tried to get it to work. One would think that it wouldn't be too hard, but I don't know of anybody who has tried.

So in other words, Wayne, the proper Gnome libraries, et al, aren't installable on OS X? GTK, libnjb, libGnomeui, etc.? :2confused:

Actually I believe that most are available via FINK. However, I'm not sure how well (if at all) the JB3 will work even with these installed on Mac OS X.
