I went the cheapo route for right now.

I went to wallmart and picked up a sturdy strap cooler. Put some foam in it and it holds everything great.

i take everything out one at a time and put in the bottom of the cooler. When i am done stteing up the Ad-20 slides down perfect with the nobs a few inches from anything and still reachable and cables coming straight up. The nomad and the d8 sitting right on top of everything else.

I specifically picked a bag in which I could carry and run my gear with minimal setup and breakdown. All I have to do to get ready:

[1] Set up stand
[2] Pull out caps and place in mount bar/shockmount on stand
[3] Raise stand
[4] Power on

I think the Mountainsmith Blaze or Cairn lumbar packs are a great way to slim down from a Rackgear bag. I lugged all my gear into the shop to see if it would all fit. As I've slimmed down, I could probably go with the smaller Cairn, but already have the Blaze, so I'll stick with it for now.

don't know about the blaze but you can with the Cairn model, that's my fob bag. I highly recommend it, I just wish it had room for the P1 and the u89s too.

Modify: I found one for 67.50. The difference between the cairn and the blaze is cubic inches...the blaze is 780, the cairn is 1150. I am assuming I can't find one for less?

I must say the rakgear bag is great. Holds u89s, big zaolla cables, d10 proII, mini me, oade m148. 2x6v and 1x12v and a whole nother rig 150>v3 comfortably, could easily get to everything.

I have a Rakgear, the "Slam" model I believe (the only notebook rakgear they currently sell), and I would not call it roomy. While the rack has room for three shelves, it only shipped with two, and the space between them is so tiny. Are other people using different bags? Anyone used the Rakgear Notebook Deluxe (they don't make it anymore, but I found a place that still sells them)?

i went to the camera shop today with my entire rig and sized the lowepro nova 5, didn't work. moved to the Commercial AW, played with it for about 30 min going through a bunch of configurations. BIG bag, but will hold my entire rig
skm 184, v3, dap1, shock mounts, windscreens, t-bar, 12v eco, 2x6v eco, box of dats, and cables. looking forward to just walking in w/one bag and my stick. with the sonic, still need to carry another full bag with cables, tapes, etc.

found it on ebay @ photococan. they have a huge amount of bags and half price of everyone else.

photococan is the shit! thats where i got my nova 5. yeah, there is no way you could fit all your gear into it. i can fit my v3, d8, 6v, and mics, and some other ramdom stuff, tapes, flashlights, paper, pens, etc. i ran it tonight for the 1st time for MMW/Moe. in Bham. it was soooo nice to have a <2min setup and teardown!!! lowepro rocks!!!

I've been using my RAK PAK for a while now (my model is actually discontinued) and love it. got the P1> V2 on its own shelf Msbm sits on the P1 during recording...packs away nicely when traveling. Batts (x2) on the bottom. Now that I put the M148 in place of the V2, the M148 is too fat to be on the shelf, so it sits on the bottom and the batts get the shelf), 140's in tupperware in the back and all kinds of shit in every pocket. Then it goes on the back like a good turtle

and I don't have to lug the pelican.
I'm looking for the either the Cairn or the next one larger for stealth usage. Want to have enough room for the V3 too be. Got Dylan on mothers day...after all its in my "back yard" so I have to go.

Any suggestions on a lumbar pak for 2x batts,140, m148, v3, worst case P1 but can use the D7?

Well I was trying to decide btw the Mountainsmith Cairn and the MS Blaze. I went w/ the Blaze hoping it would be big enough. Best price I could find was $67. Those other packs shown are good but for fob, having to wear it on the shoulder all night is too much., been there done that...going for the waist pak

THat's the RAKPAK claim to fame is that it is approved by the Chiro's and it really does make a world of difference but can't really go up front w/ it...unless it's Bonnaroo or the like.

i use a pelican 1490 laptop case...fits my bigass sony vaio laptop and the usbpre next to it, mics and caps go under the usbpre, batts can go under the laptop....very nice for slimness and protection, the expensive gear all fits in one bombproof case.
then i also carry a dakine heli pro pack in with me, has all cables, the valence n-charge battery, shock mounts, flashlight, nugs, etc. and my stand strapped to it.
not all in one by any means, i suppose i'd need either a bigger bag or a smaller laptop to get any smaller. unless i could fashion a bag of some sort to strap around the pelican briefcase, might work...

oh yeah...i can run everything from the pelican, no prob. just prop the laptop up on some extra foam i put in the case to allow ventilation (overheating/lack of ventilation was a primary cause of shutdown for me in the early days of laptop taping in this case)....prop the usbpre up on foam also to allow access to the controls from the side of the case, it's ready to go. the backpack can sit on the side someplace. oh yeah, i've also got a right angle usb adaptor, since the port is on the rear of the laptop, there's not rooms enough for an extra 1.5" that a standard usb plug uses, this one routes the cable directly up from the port and only uses about .5" so it can stay plugged in even while the laptop is fully inserted in the foam. that cable is run behind a custom piece of foam i put in the lid to protect the top of the gear, i can also stash notes/cd's/stickers in there too. i will put up some pics very soon, look in the rig pics section!

cases4less.com has some real nice pelican cases the one i have is made for a labtop but i keep my M1 batt pack blanks and all my cables and have plenty of room. this case is excellent it locks and has a air release for flying. i think it was like $120

I went from HHB, V2, AD2K+, 2 12volts mic cases and everything needed in one bag. Then moved to the P1, V3, SD442 and all accessories and batteries needed. Luckily the same bag worked perfectly for both rigs. Everything is plugged in and the only thing I need to do is connect the mics and cables, hook up the stand and I'm ready to go. When on long tours, I bring along a Pelican where I can tear everything down and transport all the equip safely.

What I love about this bag is its versatility and many, many, many different pouches. And to top it off, it has two types of protection against moisture and rain. One that just protects the top from spillage. The other is an internal cover that can cover up the whole bag and make it close to 'weatherproof'.

ive saw the pics of the target shelves... and to my surprise the target here doesnt have the shelves

it wont lay flat on a shelf in the rackgear, its too deep. i am making a custom setup out of wood, where the mme face will be towards the top of the bag and easily accessible. the unit will eb at some kind of a downhill angle. i cant explain it, ive got it all drawn out, just need to make it

I still have my LowePro S&F 500 and have had it for almost 3 years. It has served me very well with all of the possible configurations to place gear. I have been able to fit 4 6v SLAs, V2/V3, MME, D8, MG210s (in wooden boxes), two AT8410s, two Shure big grey bastards, mic cables, and various other stuff. Built like a rock!!! No plans on changing anytime soon!!!

you're gonna put wooden shelves in a backpack?? maybe try something lighter weight and less bulky...i know lumber is cheap and easy to work with but i think if you can find some wire shelves to modify or even erector-set parts to build something out of you'd be happier and so would your back. plus i'd imagine wood being somewhat bulky in your bag.

You can tell from some of the solutions in this thread that you really have to look everywhere for a bag. Sometimes the strangest items fit your gear perfectly.

I have kind of a weird little setup, so I poked around for a while before I discovered a good 'ole Jansport backpack that fit everything just right.

I worried a lot about whether to run from the bag or not, and ended up doing a little of both. My NJB3, PB224, and AD-20 are all wired up in a hard case with their batteries, and that goes in the backpack. When I get there, I just pull the box out and open it up. (Ok, actually I have to plug the optical cable into the NJB3, but that's no big deal.) It sorta gives me the best of both worlds.

The Jansport has two main pockets, so one holds the mics and recorder hard case, the other holds my two sets of cables. A little pocket holds my Oktavas (spares, mains, depending on situation), and there's still an outside pocket for all the misc.

it will be a bit more bulky than the wire shelves

but to have the front of the mme where i can get to it, and still be securely in the bag, i need something custom

im not sure on the exact dimensions of the mme, but it is deep and not wide, so i have to run it at an angle downward on a shelf, if that makes any sense.

heres a couple of pics....you could mount the mme in the middle of the shelving, and have cables running belowand NEVER worry about them getting kicked/unplugged, nothing!!!

Yup, Jason Barbour...I believe he had the slam, but the deluxe is just a better bag...the internal shelves are supported at all 4 corners, vs. two. Jason actually has some assembly in the back pocket of the rakgear to allow the minime to stand vertically, cables running back into the main pocket to the full size DAT and V2 sitting on the rakgears shelves...
