Denecke PS/2 or Naiant Tiny Box>Sony M10
« on: June 21, 2010, 01:19:31 PM »
Thinking of picking either one of these up. Had a PS/2 a long time ago. Would be using either with a Sony M10. spyder9 has a modded PS/2 with a stereo mini out. Maybe someone on the board did this mod? I'd like to avoid xtra cables and adapters. Or is the Tiny Box a better solution. Will be running modded Nak CM700's>???>M10. The CM700 mod is the old leegeddy Franken Mod using the Audio Technica Phantom Power Modules. Thanks.

The -15db barrels probably won't match well with the Tiny box as it maxes at 38db gain.  Maybe for some loud stuff.

You should check with Jon at Naiant (mshilarious here), but I don't think you'd need the AT phantom power modules if you went the tinybox direction.  The tiny box should be able to be configured to power your Franken naks directly, you'd only need the correct cable/cable adapter to go from the franken nak capsule cables (3pin mini-XLR) to the input of the tinybox.

So probably meaning a 2x 3-pin mini-XLR to single 5-pin or 6pin mini-XLR cable for connecting your mics to the tinybox.  I'd bet it would make a great sounding solution, and quite small, esp if you could ditch the AT phantom adapter modules.

Just to note:  I certainly wasn't trying to shy you (or anyone else) away from the Tinybox.  I actually contacted mshilarious when I first saw the thread looking for a lower-pro solution for my 700s.  Unfortunately, mine are hardwired to the -15db barrels.  If you use the regular barrels, I'd imagine it would be a great setup.  If the Tinybox could produce about 20db more gain, I probably would have already placed an order.

depends on if he was going to use a preamp or not since the ps2 doesn't have any gain

Tony, are your cables hardwired to your AT phantom power adapters?  You could have them terminated to a 5pin miniXLR (or two 3pins and use an adapter cable) for use with the Tinybox.

Yes, they are hardwired. I would have to remove the Power Modules and use the Tinybox for power. I have no problem with that. Never liked the fact that they are hardwired.

On a similar note, I've been playing with the stock 700's with the internal batterys>M10 and getting really low levels. With the chopped 700's>Tinybox>M10 I would get better results because of the added gain from the Tinybox?

I've been talking to Jon about this. I'd happy to remove the AT modules and get rid of this hardwired setup I have now. Thanks for your input.

You would most likely get better results with the TB in the chain.  Anywhere from an additional 18 - 38db gain (I'm pretty sure it's in 3 steps 18/28/38db).  Remember, the naks are known for having low output as well.
