UA5 3 mic mix....
« on: June 23, 2003, 02:30:17 PM »
I was talking with Brian Skalinder about this.
Running 2 Nak shotguns>XLR inputs, and 1 omni>RCA inputs
NOW, how to/ what kind of plugs would I need, if this can be done at
all?

I'm thinking XLR out of mic> line transformer?> some kind of
adapter>RCA.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanx ahead , JDS

Hey Jesse --

I *think* it can be done like this:

2 shotguns into front XLRs, so they get phantom + preamp.  Just the usual, here.  Then...

1 omni > PS2 > line transformer > mono 1/4" / dual RCA male into the UA5.

So, your omni has phantom power (PS2), gain (line transformer), splits to both channels (1/4" mono / dual RCA splitter into UA5), and you can adjust the relative level v. the shotguns (on the UA5 itself).  In theory, I believe this will work.

Really, it's no different than running mics in the front, soundboard in the RCAs on the back - and this I know people have done successfully.

Oh yeah, I forgot the Naks are powered internally.  In that case it's simply:

Omni > line transformer > splitter > UA5

I think the only tricky part is getting from the 1/4" male out of the line transformer into both UA5 RCAs.  I'm sure there are other ways to do it, but I know the following will work, as I have the adapters at home:

[a]  1/4" male in / RCA male out
RCA female in / dual RCA male out

Both of these can be picked up at RS for cheap.  Let us know how it works out if you give it a go!

this is what Crieg t says over on oade.....

I did something similar about a month ago.  I ran mics on stage (xlr
in) and a pair of omnis about 10' back from the PA (battery box> rca
in, no mic pre).  Worked ok, but I really needed more gain for the
omnis.

You should be able to find an rca "y-cable", I know they make them
for subwoofers, this would give you a single rca input at the UA5.
Idealy, you'd want a preamp on that single omni since the rca/line
input of the UA5 doesn't give you much gain.  Your idea with the
line transformers might do the trick (omni mic> xlr> line
transformer> 1/4"> rca> rca "y-cable"> UA5).

I think I might have to try this.....

Thanx B. Ska!!! +T

The AT and Hosa line transformers are only about $20/each, and both offer a little more than 20dB of gain.  Not sure if that'll be enough gain, but...probably?

The whole thing shouldn't cost you more than ~$30, so...should be easy to get "approval" from the wife.

Hey, if you're going to quote me, at least get my name right.  :spin:

Please let us know how it worked.  I could see doing more of this in the future, especailly hypers with an omni "fill".

Great to hear, Jess!  Was this last night at John Brown's Body?  Did you just monitor your mix out of the UA5 headphone jack to get the relative levels where you wanted them?

I have a feeling you're going to have a lot of fun playing around with 3/4 mic mixes in the near future.   8)

OK, here is the run down, part #'s included from RS

I was a little sauced when I got home so......

2 Nak CM100>CP1 Cards/ 1CM300>CP4 Shotgun>pmoded UA5>D8

Mic's set at DIN, 17cm, gun clamped to my vert bar, right in the middle, around 9'. DFC about 20 -25' back. There was no SB to be seen, it actually was behind a wall?

This is what I needed.......

Matching Transformer, XLR>1/4" male MONO, #274-016
1/4" Dual coupler(F 1/4" on both ends) #274-1556
1/4" MONO Y cable #420-2545
2 phono-phono adapters #247-0863
I am transfering right now....

So, the 2 100's going to my XLR inputs, and the 300 going to the RCA's.

I can't believe how good this sounds! Truely the best tape I have made to date!

FWIW, John Brown's Body kicks ASS!!,  $10= 2 sets!!

If anybody would like a copy, you know what to do.....

ALL CAPS WERE SCREWED IN!!! :coolguy:!!

Hey Jess --

Did Steve show up and get a patch out of you?  Would love to hear the recording - any chance you can bring a copy to RRandolph on Sunday?
