Title: Sony PCM-M10 Battery Life?
Post by: rigpimp on June 11, 2018, 05:18:35 PM
OK, I know a lot of folks have batteries last forever with this thing so why can't I get it to happen?

I only use this deck to stealth and ALWAYS have to bring an extra set of AA's with me to swap out during a multi-act show.  I was unable to swap batteries last week and they died toward the end of about 3 or so hours of recording.

I am using older Eneloops and newer Eneloops with the same results.  These ARE NOT crappy alkaline batteries.

I do have a formatted 64GB card and always record to the card first and then overflow to recorder.  Should I be doing it the other way around?  Does anyone think that large disk access may be the issue?  I know the M10 is only supposed to support a 32GB card max.

Opinions?  Insights?

Have you tried regular alkalines in your m10?

The rechargeable benefits do not seem to add up with the m10 when people are getting 30-50 hours with alkalines.

No, I have never tried alkaline batteries.  I guess I have to give it a shot.

I have not bought alkalines in years.  I bet I have been using Eneloops for close to 10 years now.  I think that my old ones even say Sanyo on them.

I say the above also as a user of rechargeables, but for some reason the run times in the m10 just fall short. I'm sure there is a reason for it, but never really looked into the matter.

I use rechargeables and get fair times. I have had to swap them out if there are 3 sets at 40 min each. Not a big thing for me.

I stealth record gangster rap shows.

It is kinda a big deal for me to be able to set it and forget it.  Often, you are talking about 3, 4, 5, maybe 6 random rappers with DJ's in between before the final act comes out.  Doors at 8pm headliner at 11:45pm.

Security inside of these shows concern me as 99% of these dudes are big, bad ass mofos.  Each from a different entourage.  If I lock eyes my fight or flight kicks in quick.

I will try alkalines, Horus

I use Duracell Quantum Alkaline and they last FOREVER!!!!

The one time i tried my Eneloop pro they died prematurely.

Also theres a setting in the menu to choose which type of battery you are using.

But Duracell Quantum i easily get 25 hours. :headphones:

Agree. Use alkalines.  Only time I've lost a show due to power was using rechargeables.

Jeez, I use half used AA Alkalines frequently, and my rule of thumb is that if they're lower than 1.37 volts when I'm setting up that day, I won't try to get the opening act AND the main act on that set, unless I'm desperate.

With a fresh set of Alkalines, I usually get at least two hours without dropping a bar. Note that I only run line in or internal mics. I don't run plug in power. I usually keep the backlight on when the deck is running.

Does going mic in to m10 eat up more juice than line in?

I cannot answer that.  I always go line in from my custom Tinybox.  Anyone else?

i have always used line in and that thing runs forever

The only thing i could think of that would rain the battery faster would be the PIP powering. So maybe if you are running power to the mics it would make sense to drain faster but AA Alkaline or Endloops seem to last forever.

I would assume so. It's got more amplifying to do to make the same signal level. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Plus plug in power!

I use a mix of mic in and line in, and have never noticed a significant difference in battery life. (Either way, it's ~forever.)

I did use PIP for the first time ever last weekend (thanks to carefully leaving my battery box at home, as noted in another thread), and after 2-3 hours of run time my M10 had gone from four bars to three. So PIP may drain the battery somewhat faster, but it still lasts a good long while.

I guess the other obvious thing is to make sure that you have the correct battery type selected in the menu. Perhaps the battery is fine but the graphical representation has you thinking its dying ?

Thank you all for the info.  I'll note checking the battery type (probably in Detail menu?) and switch to alkaline for the M10 only.

Locking it down.
