Title: Need information on *that* acoustically transparent hat
Post by: fandelive on March 05, 2016, 01:56:34 AM
I've read a bunch of old threads lately about a hat that is said to be acoustically transparent.
I took a close look at some pictures of this particular hat on several online stores and I can't believe the fabric is actually 100% acoustically transparent.

Has anyone ever run a comp wearing the hat (mics mounted under) vs. without the hat obstructing the mics ?
Is there a particular spot where I should mount the mics inside the hat ?

Delighted users, please PM me with pictures and/or feedback information (only PMs please).

Many thanks ;)

I have recorded 700+ shows stealth with
a Kangol Ventair and the results are pretty
sweet. The mic config inside the hat is going
to be a big factor in how good it sounds.

I've only run a handful of shows in my kangol vent air, sounds pretty much like it did in the spot I stood or sat. You're unlikely to notice a difference, and if there is, that's the cost of doing  >:D.

Added bonus of being a windscreen as well. To Hell with those ceiling fans!

For outside shows, I'd still use a light windscreen, though. I've had problems with wind when taping with "the hat" in the past (e.g. here (https://archive.org/details/teganandsara2013-06-22.mbho.flac16)).

Confirming pretty much NIL difference between "the hat" and "no hat."  Recorded many shows with about 4 or 5 different rigs in the same hat.

I'm a very critical listener and I could hear ZERO difference.  Probably the only differences were more visible: white guy wearing "the hat" but also "no mics seen."

"That" hat is acoustically perfect for  >:D operations. The only downside is, you will feel and look like a complete tool, but do it often enough and the pain begins to numb somewhat.

Man, that must be a pretty BIGGG hat..!

It's the infamous :veryevil: hat. Also the reason why there are more stealth tapers in Mexico than anywhere else in the world.
