I never thought I would see the day! Now they just need to make a full size version supercard like the 4011s, and a compact like the 4022s. Looking at the specs, the big numbers that jump out to me show the "trumpet" version to be able to take the highest SPLs, with a loss in S/N ratio compared to the other 3 versions, that all seem to have identical specs. There are no frequency response numbers, though. No way to tell if they are all linear, or have bumps at different points based on the instrument type.

Press release:

DPA Launches New Series of Instrument Mics at PLASA 2008

DPA Microphones has unveiled the first four microphones from its brand new 4099 microphones aimed at the MI market at PLASA 2008 on stand number L47.

DPA believes that musicians deserve to get the best sound possible from their instruments when playing live. The company has taken its groundbreaking technology, revered by live, recording and broadcast professionals for capturing the most natural, uncoloured sound possible, and created a range of cost-effective mics handcrafted in Denmark for a wide array of musical instruments, complete with robust carrying cases and gentle, discreet mounting solutions.

The first four models in the new range are the 4099 Guitar, 4099 Sax, 4099 Trumpet and 4099 Violin. Each 4099 is meticulously designed and optimized for one particular instrument family, to ensure the finest audio reinforcement when performing live. Further instrument-specific mics are in the pipeline.

All 4099 condenser microphones feature supercardioid polar patterns for highly uniform off-axis frequency response and superior gain-before-feedback. Capable of handling high sound pressure levels - particularly important for trumpet players - these microphones live up to DPA's pedigree of breathtaking clarity and richness.

Despite their tiny, discreet size and lightweight design, 4099s are rugged and stable, while the versatile gooseneck provides stable positioning. Yet the mics can easily be unclipped and repositioned or moved to another instrument with only one hand. Furthermore, the 4099 microphone mounting system is designed to be extremely gentle, never marring the finish of an instrument.

The MicroDot connector and more than 35 available DPA adapters ensure compatibility with just about any wireless system, and the product can also be used as a standard 48V phantom powered microphone via its supplied XLR connector.

For a world preview and hands-on demo, visit DPA on stand number L47, where a live band is putting these groundbreaking new mics through their paces, and visitors' badges are being scanned and entered into a competition to win one.

The graph Moke posted is the frequency response from 8" away, benefiting from the proximity effect.

There is a published frequency response spec for the guitar mic:

Frequency range, ± 2 dB:
80 Hz - 15 kHz with 2 dB soft boost at 10 - 12 kHz. First-order low-cut filter at 80 Hz with DAD4099.

Probably will sound a little thin/lacking in bottom end from a distance.  (Might be just right for overly bass bloated rock music through a PA though):

Wow, 5 posts since I buried my head in the DPA site.

My observations are pretty much the same.  As DATBRAD noted, there seems to be two different capsule specs - higher max SPL figure for trumpet, lower for all the others.   The differences between the guitar, violin, & sax models are probably just the mounts.  Sensitivity for the other three is the same as the 4061 but the self noise is better (equivalent to the 4060). Oddly they do not state the sensitivity of the trumpet version, but it must be less.

The non-trumpet versions would be a better fit for us, but proximity effect roll off starts pretty high up at around 500-600hz, too high and too much for countering the PA bass-bloat region where it might be useful.  At 1 meter from the source, sensitivity appears to be:

-2.5db@~250Hz
-5db@~160Hz
-7.5db@~100Hz
-10db@~60Hz.

I don't know how much more that falls off at distances beyond 3 feet, but that's too much for me.  They do emphasize that it's not a multipurpose microphone.

Here's the polar with pretty colors:

Isn't the 4023 a decent mini card?  It even has XLR connectors.  8)

The 4023 is a very, very, nice "compact" card, not a mini -  ;D

Yes, excellent mic but hard to power for super stealth gigs :) where size of power supply is an issue.

Which power supply are you using for the 4021/22/23 and what's the size of this power supply?
