Control your SD 788 from an iPhone / iPad (CL-WIFI)
« on: February 24, 2011, 02:31:28 PM »
I had not seen this mentioned here yet and a search returned nothing..... Anyway, this thing looks pretty badass IMO and hopefully they extend the capabilities to the 702/722/744 models.

"Description

The CL-WIFI is a hardware accessory that provides the 788T and 788T-SSD Digital Recorder with WiFi connectivity. With a CL-WiFi connected to a 788T over the C.Link connection, the 788T is controllable by an Apple iOS device, such as an iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch running iOS version 4 or greater, users can control a 788T with the free CL-WiFi Controller app.

The CL-WIFI hardware requires a 788T or 788T-SSD running firmware revision 2.14 or greater.

Key Features

Simple, single cable connection to the 788T
Powered by the 788T
Status LEDs indicate power and WiFi activity
External antenna with SMA connector"

BADASS!

but it would be alot cooler if you could make individual channel level adjustments wirelessly.   Still pretty cool though.

I agree, however I think this is still pretty new, so changes like that are likely to follow. Since the 788 CAN have it's gain remotely controlled (CS-9) I am sure it would be possible to do it from this unit also..... Something that would really be great IMO would be to get monitoring of the mix and channel solo functions right from the headphone jack of the iPhone / iPad. I think this is a great concept in how we can use some of our mobile devices now!

That video is pretty cool!

I remember seeing Panic back in summer 2003 when Chris had something similar to control the soundboard with a tablet PC - I bet that setup alone cost in 2003 as much as the 788-SSD with the CL-9 and the CL-WIFI does now!  Back at Vegas '03, I went to get a beer and came back to FOB at the HardRock and saw someone standing there right at our gear - I put my hand on his shoulder to move in and it was Chris running the board - pretty sick I must say!

I think the ABB ran something similar around this time.

I do hope SD refreshes its 7xx series and adds in this capability - it looks like it (like the CL-9) uses the USB port so probably will not work with anything but the 788.

Music can at the least least explain you and at the most expand you

According to the new Sound Devices FAQ for the product:

How is the CL-WIFI hardware powered?
The CL-WIFI hardware is powered by the 788T over the C.Link port. This is the same RJ-type connection that powers the CL-1 and CL-2 accessories. The CL-WIFI draws very little power from the recorder for its operation.

Does the CL-WIFI and the app operate with my 744T?
No. The CL-WIFI hardware and iOS app are dedicated to the 788T/788T-SSD recorders.

Well thats a bummer. Looks like I'll just have to sell my 722 and get a 788 :P Imagine being in the pisser at like Phish, at a big arena, and just whipping out your iPhone/iPod Touch, and starting your deck from like 100+ feet away ;D
