yeah it does, but 1440 per unit...and how would you power it in the field. man could you imagine running [insert your favorite mics] into that infront of a 722 at 24/96...

Neat - Almost more of a mini mixer design...Gain + Trim controls...

I presume that gives you a finer bit of control...

1440 is also the price on the neve site, im sure it will retail for less (that is, if neve retails, do they?)

im not arguing with the cost, just sayin its way out of my range :P

More detailed control and less of a sonic impact since you can potentiometer with less!  Switches for the big jumps.

Doesn't look like he designed it specifically for our purposes but I can't wait to hear this box!!

Yum!

I did follow the link when you first posted it, was asking a general question about neve products, not that one specifically. He has a good reputation obviously, but i didnt know if there was a signature sound that his products had , a charactaristic, a color....(sp)
Just curious.

I haven't played with it, yet, so can't comment yet on sonic characteristics.  Only powered it on to test some new IC's, but I reckon this box is a bit slicker than an m148.  I'm trying to get tickets to the Mraz benefit show 7/27 in SoHo or Howie Day Tuesday to debut it, but both are a tough ticket.  If anyone can help, please let me know.

Spent yesterday MacGyver'ing together a rackmount shelf for the Neve and Mytek to suit my fancy.  Both units fit readily on a shallow rack shelf with some careful drilling of the shelf.  Neve is quite heavy, but still significantly easier to carry around than my primary rig.

http://www2.bc.edu/~jonescx/dmb/begin.JPG
http://www2.bc.edu/~jonescx/dmb/end.JPG

Howie Day w/ Anna Nallick (my new favorite female pop star now that Michelle is married and pregnant with a child I didn't father), Jason Mraz, DMB all in town this week, I'm just without tickets to all but the latter.  And need night 2 Randall's tickets, so if anyone wants to get this box close night 2, charity is always welcome.

Thanks kindly.

Chris

the neve as a pre-amp is a "helper". which means  it's rather more focused and forgiving.

Chris, did you use any of that sweepable HP with this stack tape? It really sounds great and reinforces my need for one of these 5012's.

I do all my stuff in post; didn't use any of the HP functions...only lights that were lit were the P48 indicators :)

I've heard the DMB PA sound better, but in such a festival-type atmosphere with people packed tight, I was pleased.  Subcards love the low end, and the PA was a tad bright, but this is pretty much straight-to-disk sound.  If the Neve was going to muddy or loosen the low end, it would have in this setting, believe me.  Mytek is a serious box, and so is the Neve.  Highly recommended.

Nice have you had a chance to record anything in stereo to get a feel for the soundstage of this box?
How would you describe the sonic characteristics of the neve in comparision with a m148?
I was considering picking up a 148 but my go this route if the neve shares the same qualities as the Oade.

the imaging question is based on not stack taping and running center at a show that runs a stereo PA

I was under the impression that DMB ran a mono mix not stereo.
Looks like a fine pre amp hope you enjoy it I may go with one myself.
The M148 is a Oade design pre with point to point wiring and fixed 20 db of gain. It has a very open soundstage a warm sound and is very forgiving in bad acoustic environments.

or maybe something acoustic or onstage.  Really, anything besides a stack tape would be great.  Just looking for something where I have a point of reference.

i run 12v 7aH SLA's for both the mytek and neve units.  both are overkill.

agree with scott; irving is not the proper proving ground for this box.

i'll get it out again when i can.

- yeah, I am actually pretty psyched about that, as I am OK with staying w/ 16 bits for a while.  I just got that in the mail - the new rig is gonna weigh a lot more than the UA-5 did!

I'd really like to give this pre a spin in some acoustic circumstances!
- Give me a few months to fiddle w/ it - then shoot me a PM.  I have no problems loaning it to you, especially given some of the wierd stuff you tape...not that many Sitars in beantown!

fair enough..even as a fan I cant say that...

but to equate wilco as "best band in the universe" ...maybe if the title was "self indulgent singer who will put you to sleep" or "band that has way to high a sense of self importance" :P

center panned mix?  tracks are panned hard left and right, actually...

JBT tape is DFC, 4011's ORTF if you want to evaluate imaging capability.  others are stack, but nothing is panned to the center.

sounds nice, does have that 'centered' image that moke was talking about

4015's are subs or omnis ???

also, has really nice drums/instrument pickup but daves voice sounds distant

overall, sounds pretty good for RR, could be better, could be worse, RR is also prolly the hardest place to tape tho, so good job!

and the extent to which A-B has a more 'mono' sound is obviously a function of how directional one's microphones are; subcards are less affected, IMO.  i don't like a diffuse sound, often favoring the clarity offered by this config.

just got this email from rupert....in short, if you are thinking of buying a portico do it now for the intro price ($1440) ends on friday (2005.11.04)

Dear Matthew,

The AES show was a tremendous success, and we would like to thank everyone that stopped by to say hello and check out our new products. The New York AES saw the launch of the Portico 5032 Mic Pre/EQ, the 5043 Limiter-Compressor and the Vertical Rack-Frame capable housing up to 8 Portico modules in 6 Rack Spaces, our first step towards the introduction of a full fledged mixing system! These new modules expand the Portico Series and increase your choice of high quality sound processing tools that can be connected when and where you need them in the signal chain.

The Portico 5032 is a single channel Mic Pre/EQ having a transformer coupled input, selectable from independent mic or line inputs. It includes a full featured Mic Pre identical to that found on the 5012 with the addition of a flexible 3-band Equalizer in the Mr. Rupert Neve tradition. The 5032 is equipped with high and low frequency shelving curves and has a Parametric Mid Band covering 80hz-8kHz in two ranges.

The Portico 5043 is a 2-channel compressor featuring a discrete main signal path. In addition to controls for Threshold, Ratio, Attack, Release and Gain Make Up, the 5043 offers a choice of Feed-forward or Feed-back control capable of yielding unobtrusive musical sounding dynamics as well as "brick-wall" limiting.  The Portico 5043 can link both internal control lines or multiple additional 5043s enabling one of them to serve as "Master".  The Portico 5043 includes both line and mixing buss inputs.

For more information you can check out the entire Portico range at: http://www.rupertneve.com/porticorange.html

Friday November 4th will mark the end of our introductory pricing on the 5012 Mic Pre Duo and the 5042 True Tape FX/Line Amp. We would like to thank all of those that have purchased from us already and encourage all those that have not yet taken advantage of the limited-time introductory offer. Not only will you get the genuine Rupert Neve sound at a great price, if you purchase your 2nd unit, or buy 2 units before November 4th, 2005 we will include the optional rack mount kit at no additional charge!

Again, we appreciate your interest in our products and look forward to continuing to provide you with tools designed to provide the sound of genuine vintage analog modules at an affordable price. If you have any questions regarding any of our products or would like to place an order, please do not hesitate to contact us directly.

Matt (ingsy) has one in town, and we both run MG's, we've talked about doing some sort of comp, although it wouldn't be the most scientific, because we'd also be using different A/D's.  if we get around to it, we'll be sure to post it.

at red rocks, yes...A-B 4015's.

howie day and JBT, ORTF 4011's.

variations of the following:

DPA 4011 Cardioid / 4015 Wide Cardioid > Luminous Audio Technology Synchestra 4/9's Silver XLR Interconnect > Rupert Neve Designs Portico 5012 Microphone Preamplifier > Luminous Audio Technology Synchestra Signature 6/9's Copper XLR Interconnect > Mytek Digital Stereo192 Analog-to-Digital Converter (@ 24-bit / 96 kHz) > Luminous Audio Technology Allegro Signature 4/9's Silver AES / EBU Digital Interconnect > Sound Devices 722 Hard Disk Recorder (locked to Stereo192 clock @ 96 kHz; 24-bit / 96 kHz)

Location in reguards to the PA?  Stand height etc?

I might be wrong but the samples sound like they're PA/stack tapes.  Do you have any samples from mid-field or far field?  It sounds great, but it's hard to judge the sonic qualities with a PA tape IMO.

i haven't run this enough to be sure, but as of right now i have to agree that it is more transparent than i would have thought, givin what the neve salesguy was saying.  i think it depends if you turn on the 'silk' button, which i am gonna try out on Friday.  anyone else try this option out yet?  the website states: "The RND 5012 uses mainly single-sided amplifier circuitry that excludes any possibility of crossover distortion. The “SILK” button reduces negative feedback and adjusts the frequency spectrum to provide a very sweet and musical performance".

Why would one push the levels to the 4, 10, or 22 levels?  Obviously not for our use, but surely for some - can someone shed some light for me?

Why would one push the levels to the 4, 10, or 22 levels?  Obviously not for our use, but surely for some - can someone shed some light for me?

I wondered this as well, basically the meter is 'with reference to the output'.  Here is what is written in the manual:
****************
An eight segment LED bar-graph meter is fitted to each channel, calibrated in dBu as follows: -30, -18, -12, -6, +4, +10, +16, +22
With Refrence to the balanced output signal level.
The input level can be determined by reading the Meter indication, then subtracting the Gain settings of the Sensitivity swith and the Trim control.  For Example, if the meter is reading +10 dBu, with the Trim control at, say, +2 and the main Gain switch is at 42, the level of the input signal is 10 - 42 - 2 = -34 dBu.
****************
I haven't got the hang of this yet, so I use them to make sure each channel is level, then use the AD500 and JB3 to detect clipping.

Duh!!

Doesn't everything come off pretty nice n clean on the stacks?

I ran 4022>V3>m1 and at853RX>mp2>m1 (no adc) on the stacks at multiple shows, VERY minor difference in sound.  Now take the 2 and record FOB, there's no comparrison, the difference is huge.  It's a not-so-great way to get the real feel for the sound of that combo IMO.

It's usually the most expensive way to go.  You'll usually pay MSRP from the manufacturer, it's so that they aren't undercutting the retailers.

Its not much cheaper anywhere else either. The introductory period has ended, so the price went up. I called around to 4 places...all places i get good deals at, and all within 45-50 bucks of neve direct..sucks. oh well, im buying a different pre anyway.  :P

Any updates?  I would love to hear more about this unit.  How it measures up to other pre's...etc.
