Cool, and no CNC work necessary what so ever.  It looks to me like there's no way to charge those batt's while in the box, correct?  Looks like you're having fun...

I haven't figured out how to charge the five 9v NiMH batteries while they are in the box.

While it's almost the size of the box w/ 15 cells; if you went to LiFePo4 3.2v cells at around $5 a cell, you could provide 48v at 1200mah instead of the 160mah ones your using and be festivus-maximus without a recharge...  ;D Actually, building a double-decker box with a standard connector between compartments (say deans) inside would allow you to easily swap batteries/packs without opening the amp section. Just a thought, not sure how practical it would be.

Yeah, for me having to recharge the batteries externally isn't a big deal. I don't do festivals anymore. I rarely do more than a couple of shows per month anymore.   I like having the batteries inside the case, because it's one less box and one less connection I have to worry about. I had thought of external 48v battery pack option. That's where I would be able to use an external DC input jack.

Probably cleaner, interesting idea though.  :P

Looks like a neat box.

Nice work Chuck! Gold colored...have you named it yet? C3-PO? From the Colorado Crue thread it seems as if Jimna has been huffing your left over paint  ;D

Can't wait to hear some pulls.

<snip>

I started getting interested in these amps after reading this:
http://www.audiomasterclass.com/arc.cfm?a=giant-killing-$5-mic-preamp-its-secrets-revealed

An electronics hobbiest can build one of these pre-amps fairly cheap. Again, read the $5 mic Preamp article.

:o  Wish he'd had some music samples.  Voice is rather narrow in Hz range but for what it's worth, $5 is all it seems you have to spend.

That $5 preamp will need some more components to work safely. More like my schematic presented earlier:

Maybe some protecting diods have to be added? I was not going for phantom power at all. The battery supply was intended to be +/-7.4 V. I think that would allow for an output of 5V (about 2V less than the supply rails). My gear needs 2.5V for 0dBFS. Noise is not a problem with the INA217 as long as the gain is above 20dB. I use 25-40dB most of the time. The mic preamp was intended to sit just 5-10 cm away from the balanced input of the soundcard. No need for capacitors in series of the output as there are some at the input of the soundcard.

Perhaps a fixed gain doesn't have commercial appeal but it does indeed work in niche markets.  Please see the venerable fixed gain Oade M148 for example.  ;)
Yes, but what do you HEAR?

My Naiant pre-amp doesn't have fixed gain.
See the photo below. My kit pre-amp is in the middle with the two knobs and red LED.

None of the Naiant littleboxes are fixed gain... as far as I know.

I have to say that I am very happy with mine, so far.
