A good stealth cable?
« on: March 29, 2004, 08:19:24 PM »
Does anyone have experience with the Canare L-4E5C narrow profile cable? Or what else would one recommend?

Thanks

I built a set of these fine cables! It uses Canare StarQuad cable normally found in snakes. I ordered a 4-channel piece of the cable and stripped out the individual cable piece and then put the gold neutrik ends on it. This cable can easily be stealthed! If you put some right angle ends in it, you could also run full bodied mics, such as the small km140's, in a Kangol hat. This is probably the most flexable cable I have ever seen. It cost less than $15.00 to make a pair.
Peace.

PM Todd R

he has experience with building stealth xlr cables.

that cable could work great if the xlr housing could be removed and replaced with some shrink tubing or the like to reduce the bulkiness.

I think that's what Todd did...

I built a pair of 25' mic cables using that Canare low-profile starquad.  I just used the smaller version to save on space since I was making a somewhat long set.  I like them alot, but I wouldn't call them very stealthy.  By my quick measurements, the L4E5C is about 3/16" or 0.1875" in diameter.

I also built a pair of truly stealth cables out of the smallest balanced cable Mogami makes.  Based on my quick look at markertek.com, I'd say it was the Mogami 2490, 2 Conductors plus ground, .067" outer diameter, 32 AWG (not positive, but I think this is it).  This cable is smaller than my km140 active cables, about the same as walkman-style headphones.

And yes, Tim is right, I built the mic side with just the inner core of the Neutrik connector and used shrink wrap to save space.  I considered selling them once a few months back.  So if you check through the Yard Sale, you can find a picture of the cables I made.
