Do you guys trust optical adapters?
« on: December 27, 2004, 01:53:56 PM »
I have a regular toslink > toslink optical cable. since I'm runnin ua-5 > jb3 I got two rat shack adapters: toslink>mini and toslink>rightangle toslink. Would you guys trust optical adapters on each end of your optical cable? thanks

Depending on what type of adapters they are you should be able to trust them... for the mini adapters, if the plug is all solid plastic with just the glass tip, then that's good. If there's a gold metal tip on there, it might break off.. that happened on two of mine within a week of getting them. My radio shack right angle toslink > toslink has worked fine ever since I got it though

Definately carry an extra Toslink>Mini adapter.  I've broken these (broken right off INSIDE the JB3) and missed a show because of it (Dead Atlanta in August, not like is missed much  ;D ), but I DO carry an extra now.  I PREFER the adapter over an integrated cable myself as I'm bound to break another one of these days - and I'd rather replace a $2 adapter than a $35 cable...

excellent point, I was thinking I should just get the integrated cable but now I think an adapter is the best choice. +t

I use right angle adapters on both ends and they have worked out great.   I busted one once only because of my own idiocy yanking on the back of the cable on the UA-5 end.

SP Cable is a sure bet.  I think it's time for team SP Optical!

I spoke too soon. My right angle adapter just shit the bed... now that Radio Shack has discontinued them, it's impossible to find them anywhere without having to pay excessive amounts for shipping. This is frustrating...

Great adapters.  Mine are a year old and haven't caused any troubles at all...
