AKG 480>Mini-Me
« on: September 07, 2007, 04:57:22 AM »
Had my first show with the AGK>Apogee setup tonight, and ran into some problems almost immediately.

Let me preface this by saying the band I recorded was not abnormally loud, nor was I super FOB close to the stacks, this was pretty much average dB wise. Anyway, the clip lights on the MME and the Microtrack stayed on non-stop for the entire first song. I had the gain set at just barely over line-in (so almost @ zero), so I was stuck. The only way I could get the levels at normal peak was by turning on the SLC (Soft Limit/Compressor).

WTF?

I've ran 480s before with a V2, V3, and M148 and never had this issue. The mics aren't that hot, are they?

Is there some trick I'm missing?

Have you switched the internal jumpers on the minime ? If not you need to set them to the low gain setting as they are set to high from the factory ...

EDIT to add ...

In case you were wondering the gain ranges are as follows:

High setting: 30 - 65 dB
Low Setting: 10 - 45 dB

These were, as the tech told me, "rough" numbers as the manual does state a minimum of 12 db, hence the 10 dB on the low setting.

480s are the only mics i've ever owned but i've always been told they are hotter than most other mics.    back when i ran a beyer with the stepped gain, i used to have to sometimes put the pad on the mics to keep from clipping.

Nick,

Had the same problem with my old mme until I switched the jumpers.  Download the pdf on apogee site, the swithching of the jumpers might take a total of 5 minutes.  The mme is a hot pre, with loads of gain.  I found that all amplified PA music I recorded needed the low gain setting.  Now for acoustic stuff, the high gain setting was the tits.

+Ts all around. Just opened it up and sure enough, the jumpers were on high gain.
