so does the ua-5 give both coax & optical out at the same time?  i'd like to be able to run coax to my dat & give the optical out md patchers.  i was assuming that since there is a switch for coax or optical it would only work for which ever one it is set for?  am i wrong?

As stated above, all digital outputs are active, simutanueously, no need to flip switches or stand on your head.

That switch is for input only.

Ah cool.  I thought that was on output.  Thanks for the heads up!
