New Panasonic 4k compact digital camera TZ100 (EU model) / ZS100 (US model)

(1/20) > >>

sckofelng:
Panasonic has announced a brand new compact camera entitled TZ100 in the EU (TZ101 in Germany) and ZS100 in the US at the CES in Vegas which includes following specs:

1 Inch Sensor (probably from Sony)
10x optical Zoom (37-370mm in 4k Video)
20x intelligent zoom
F 2.8-5.9 lens (f4 reached with 70mm kb equivalent)
4k 25/30p video (max. 15min sequence)
manual P/A/S/M and iA settings in both photo and movie possible
live viewfinder

available in March 2016

The only downhill compared to the RX100 models would be the F 2.8-5.9 aperture, otherwise it would beat those by far.
If you need more than 160mm focal length (like the LX100 or RX100 III / IV) this should be the best one available for now if you don't go for DSLR or bridge cams.

I currently still use a ZS7 from many years ago, mainly  because it shoots unlimited in 720P.  I'm thinking of upgrading, and this is how I think the models progressed over the years:

ZS7 to ZS20 to ZS40 to ZS50, now to ZS100.

ZS7 has a decent 12x zoom
ZS20 went to 20X
ZS50 went to 30X

From the specs of the ZS100, it looks like there is a larger sensor, but the zoom is now down to 10x, slightly less than my ZS7.

Is my understanding correct?  I can get a decent shot from most seats in an arena with a ZS7.  Will I notice a big change zoom-wise going from 12x to 10x, or is there some other lens math I should also look at?

I'm thinking maybe the ZS20 or ZS50 is what I should be looking at perhaps.

Well the Number of times you can zoom in the picture matters almost 0.

What matters is the focal length and the ZS7 has a focal length of 25-300mm if i am not mistaken (maybe a bit more when shooting in 720p HD)
However, the ZS100 has a twist in that:
If you film in FullHD  the focal length goes from 28mm to 280mm, but the focal length in 4k video mode moves from 28mm start to 37mm start, giving it a total focal length of 37mm-370mm aka more than the ZS7.
The only disadvantage would be the 15 min limit which is also installed on the US models, but I think there is no limit when shooting in FullHD.

The 4x bigger sensor makes it worth it if you ask me.. and you can still add the intelligent zoom in emergency cases which should still look better than the ZS7 with optical zoom only.

Looks to me as the ZS50 has the longest focal length  24mm -720mm.

sckofelng:
Yeah but a 4x smaller sensor, I'm pretty sure the ZS100 performs better with i.zoom than the ZS50 with optical zoom, especially if 4k gets downscaled to FullHD. The ZS50 has 30mm-900mm focal length when recording FullHD video (source Panasonic specs).
I'm not sure if anyone would need it that much when filming open with a digicam quite close to the stage anyway, but that is just my opinion right here.
