Help with Shure FP-24 settings?
« on: March 04, 2013, 11:11:32 PM »
Hey guys, I am curious if someone may know the best settings to have on the FP24 when running 1/8" out into line in on a M10.

I will be receiving the FP24 this week and hope to run it soon.

My main concern is that I have heard that the slightest gain will clip the recorder.  i usually run line in @ 4 on the M10 recorder dial.

I have heard folks padding their mics to not clip.  What I am wondering is that just hitting the -10dB or -20dB pad switch on the mics themselves or are they using inline pad between mics and mixer?  Does using the pads on the mics do the same thing as inline pads?  Does using the pads effect the headroom, S/N ratio, etc.???

The chain would look like this if it helps at all:

Peluso CEMC6 Cards > XLR > FP24 > 1/8" (Tape Out) > Sony M10 Line In @ 4 On recording dial

Any help would be appreciated if those of you whom have experience with this pre could chime in.

Thanks

You won't need a pad!!  I ran a sound devices MP-2 > M10 for a while and never had a problem.  Start at about 10:00 on the pre and adjust as needed.

Turn on the 1khz slate tone on the FP24....it'll be at +4dBu on the FP24 meter.
Set the input level to -16dBfs on the Sony.

Set the input level to -20dBfs on the Sony.

Interesting. At a loudish show where does that put the peaks? I generally set the MixPre at ~11:00, use mic pads or inline attenuators (-15db or so), set the M10 at 4.5, and get peaks ~-6db.

at loud shows I start at 3 (10 o'clock) using the tape out on my MP-2, run the -10dB pads on my 460s and run at 4 on my M-10

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the MP-2 start at a gain of +12 as opposed to the MixpRe and the FP24 start at 0 gain.  I imagine I would have to factor that in as well?

On the MP-2 1/8 out is +6 and XLR out is +16!!

For rock shows I run the MP-2 via 1/8" out and keep the gain below 9:00 on the dials. Running into an Edirol R-09 and never have to set its gain above 14 or so. Seems the MP-2 sounds best with the peaks only hitting the middle to low-high LEDs IMO.

Do you have the left and right channel switches in the center for both or the left channel to "left" and the right channel to "right".  Just not sure if I should have them both on the "C" setting or Left mic on the "L" and the Right Mic on the "R".  Does it even matter?
