LSD2 quad wire diagram
« on: November 19, 2007, 10:33:07 AM »
Got 50 feet of 4 conductor 20 awg silver plated cable that I'm going to make into a cable for my LSD2.

Have not been able to find the wireing diagram for the 7 pin LSD2 mic cable.  Does any one have or know what the quad wireing diagram is for the LSD2?

Thanks

I dont remeber it offhand, but a multimeter, the stock cable and about 5 minutes of time and you can figure it out. you have to jump a couple of pins together, and you need to break it out to 2, 3 pin xlrs on the output end.
have fun!

FWIW, I find it works better if you use two separate three two conductor cables.  Here are the LSD2 cable pin out specs:

Seven Pin:
Pin 1 - Red
Pin 2 - White
Pin 3 - Shield and jumper to #4
Pin 4 - Blue (Shield)
Pin 5 - Yellow
Pin 6 - Green
Pin 7 - Jumper to #3 and jumper to case/chasis ground

On the pre xlr ends:

Lower Capsule:
Pin 1 - Black (shield)
Pin 2 - Red
Pin 3 - White

Upper Capsule:
Pin 1 - Blue (shield)
Pin 2 - Yellow
Pin 3 - Green

thanks for the pin specs

I picked up the 4 conductor thinking that quad config would help.  It will be my first attempt at cabling so maybe I should just take simple steps and stick with three.

Thanks again

on the 7 pin end:
7 + (left, lower)
6 -
5,4,3 ground (jumped together)
2 + (right, upper)
1 -

but thats from memory.  a multi-meter will tell you the facts.
:)

fwiw...
your 4 pin cable will be A-OK.  no problem there.  you need 5 contacts, including ground, to make this work.  and you have them.

why SP uses a 7pin connector instead of a 5 pin...beyond me.  they must have gotten a deal on bulk jacks and said "shit..it'll work!".
2 of the 7 pins are useless.
all of the other mics like this (sans remote controlled pattern mics) use 5pin jacks.

Hey flip, I was wrong when I said three conductor.  I meant two.  Got ahead of myself.  The Quad cable will work, but you'll have to be creative with separating the shield at the dual end to connect to your xlr's.  Additionally, you'll have to heat shrink them (or similar) to protect the exposed shield.

what you do...
is make an insicion in the cable.  pull out two of the wires (that will be one of the channels) and leave about 1" of room there, so pull them down through the whole.
then solder a jumper wire directly to the shielding exposed from the cut you made.
bend cable in 1/2 at the cut, and stuff that in one XLR, leaving the remaining cable lead as your other channel (and xlr attached to the appropriate runs inside).
if that doesn't make sense, I can take pictures of my Hydra P stereo cable and post them for you to better understand.

OK - To make sure I understand, I'm going to step through the wiring.  I think I understand
the how to extract the wires and set up the shield.

The cable is 4 conductor ( Orange, Green, Blue, and White ) with shield.

***********************************************************************

If it were Two mic 3 Pin > 3 Pin XLR Balanced cable using one 4 conductor:

   Mic 1
Pin 1 - Ground - Shield -------------------------------> Pin 1 - Ground
Pin 2 - Hot - Orange ---------------------------------> Pin 2 - Hot
Pin 3 - Cold - Green ----------------------------------> Pin 3 - Cold

   Mic 2
Pin 1 - Ground - Shield --------------------------------> Pin 1 - Ground
Pin 2 - Hot - Blue -------------------------------------> Pin 2 - Hot
Pin 3 - Cold - White -----------------------------------> Pin 3 - Cold

***************************************************************************

If it were Two mic 3 Pin > 3 Pin XLR Quad cable using two 4 conductor:

Pin 2 - Hot - Orange - Green 1 --------------------------> Pin 2 - Hot
Pin 3 - Cold - Blue  - White 1 ---------------------------> Pin 3 - Cold

I was trying to put my notes together in a picture before I jumped to the work bench.  I probably confused myself.  After some thought, I think the basic wiring is:

7-Pin    3-Pin Upper    3-Pin Lower
  1               2
  2               3
  3            GND            GND
  4            GND            GND
  5                                2
  6                                3
  7            GND            GND

Everything else was a attempt to convert the basics to wire I had.  Thank's for all the help.  The parts are on there way.

I used the info from this thread to build a new cable for my LSD2. Many thanks to all. Not an easy soldering task with the 7-pin and variety of jumpers, plus I used quad cables, but the info was spot on in this thread, especially thegreatgumbino’s post (2007-11-19) which is what I used as reference.  Nickspicks also provided some guidance, again thanks.

Used two runs of Mogami W2799 quad cable, techflexed them together.  Worked perfectly, sounds great and is lower profile than the stock cable.  I’ll post my notes on the wiring using the Mogami quad cable if anyone’s interested.
