Title: Shure KSM137 matched pair or at4041 studio pack?? Please Hurry
Post by: HealthCov Chris on July 18, 2016, 03:02:10 PM
SSIA

Sorry I double posted this.  I will remove one as soon as I get some responses, I just need feedback in an hour or two to get order in on time.

I know there are many options out there, but I need to purchase from ZZounds today to get in time for Festival Wed. night and these seem to be my options for my budget.   This vendor allows me to have now and pay as I go.  I'm taping from 2 separate stages and will be running my AKG 461's at main stage and one of these two options at a Bluegrass Picking Tent.  I will be running in PAS/ORTF with my cards and pairing up with a single Studio Projects C4 center omni.  Any help would be greatly appreciated as I need to get the order in within 2 hours to get it shipped here on time.  Thanks...and hurry!

Never used the Shures but I run a pair of 4041's I got in the yard sale and couldn't be more pleased

I've never used the KSM137, but I have used the AT4051s, which are a modular version of the 4041s.  I think AT SDCs sound damn fine and are often overlooked in the taping world.

There are a bunch of recordings with each mic on the LMA.  From the few samples I've heard, I don't think you can go wrong with either.

Thanks for your responses!  I went with AT4041 package.  I like what I hear from them on the LMA better, though most of the shows are run through a UA-5 so I may be mislead.  Not to worry, they will work fine for my needs and cost less.

A fine choice!  Good luck, and if this is for your bluegrass / string-based band recording you mention in another thread, as a bluegrass-lover I'd like to hear some of the results (if you're able to share).

Good choice! I use the AT4041 pair almost every time I am out for live sound or recording.

I will be able to share most.  Will post the links!

I don't think you will be disappointed. I run mine directly into a DR-60 with great results.

Great! That is exactly what I'll be doing.

As an aside, while the 4041s are great mics, it is not the case that the 4051 is merely a modular version. It is the next tier up in AT's SD mic line, along with the 4053 (hyper) and 4049 (omni).  True, the caps are removable and switchable between the bodies, but they are better (and much more expensive) mics than the 4041.  The 4051, 4053 and 4049 list for $599 each and the 4041 lists for $299, which would be a big price difference if it was just for modularity.  If you are patient, you can often pick the 4050 line up used on e-bay for between $200-300 each.  I have pairs of each of these purchased that way.  If you are going to look for used mics, note that there is now a 3rd iteration of that line (e.g., 4051, 4051a and 4051b) and that they are not interchangeable (i.e., you would not mix them in a pair).  Not surprisingly, the older models are less expensive.

The original series (not "a" or "b").  I have a pair of these and they are very good and underrated mics IMHO.

Thanks everyone! I was in a pinch for $ and time.  I have a festival I'm leaving for tonight and needed it delivered yesterday (plus needed financing).  I'll make my 4041's a backup in the future.
