Will Edirol UA-5 output Dolby Digital/DTS?
« on: March 04, 2005, 01:15:26 PM »
I am considering the purchase of a Mac Mini to replace my DVD-P in my home theatre, use for ripping/storing movies, and use for playing back 24-bit shows (using my Simaudio Moon Eclipse LE as a DAC), and I'm wondering if the UA-5 will pass a DD/DTS stream via it's digital outputs?  I'd prefer to use optical, as I only have one SPDIF input on my HT Receiver (an older Denon) and I use SPDIF for HDTV...

Has anyone tried this?  I would use iDVD to play back the movie, most likely.

I thought about putting this in Computer Recording Help, but it's not really recording...  Also in Mic Pre section, but it's a little OT there, too.  Hope this is the right spot  :)

ua5 resamples through the digital out.  My understanding is that this resampling will destroy the dts/dolby digital info encoded into the bitstream.

I would suggest something like a m-audio audiofile fireware unit.  can be had for less than 200

MK 4V > KCY 250/5 Ig (KS 10I)  > VST62IUg > 722

Ah, I do believe resampling would destroy that encoding, and in fact, I bet it won't pass anything (as the UA-5 would have to have DD/DTS Decoders in place to resample).  Drat.

The reason I asked is, of course, I already own a UA-5.  More cost-effective than buying another box :)

I did find a emi 2|6 for $99 a few weeks ago (Sam Ash is clearancing their stock), I am pretty sure that one would work, *if* I can use it as a soundcard in iDVD.  I dunno, I haven't had an emi 2|6 in house for a few years, and all I used it for was a wintel box.
