AT853's: what mount do you use?
« on: June 03, 2005, 11:58:19 AM »
I've been thinking about this: http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/SP-DTS-11 but it looks like the mics would be spaced too far apart for the traditional ORTF, DIN, NOS and XY type patterns. Any other/similar suggestions? Thanks.....

i use those plastic tube things that came with my at853's... i did a little DIY vert bar action and can get practically all kinds of positions (except i dont think i can get xy, unless i use the spreader bar).

Audix SMT-MICRO mounts work pretty well. They're a little tight but if your careful it'll be fine. Search: Audix SMT-MICRO mounts should find something.

Maybe a couple of small scratches, but thats because these mics are chick magnets.

I use the same T-bar with Audix SMT-Micro mounts. The Audix mounts provide no shock protection and are a pain in the ass imo. The rubber part of one of mine is coming apart. I guess they're cheap enough that it's not that big of an issue....However it would be nice if somebody would make a cost-effective low profile shockmount for the AT's... or a some sort of Kwon-like bar.

Also there are some DPA mounts that work but are way too expensive ($100+ I believe) for me.

Does anyone know if it's possible to use different (i.e. bigger) windscreens with this mount?

I think this is my windscreen (AT 8117)

Exactly what I was wondering. I have this mount and would like some bigger screens, but don't think the AT8117's will fit as the opening doesn't appear wide enough. Maybe some Shure, DPA or other AT windscreens? Plus furry rats, of course. ;)

I won't be finishing the bar until later this week, but here's the an AT853 in a tensimount. Because the bands are rubber they "grip" the bodies real well, I can give a pretty good tug to the cord and they don't budge. Obviiously if you pull the cord with the intention of pulling them out they will come out, but something accidental shouldn't move them, and if you put the cords around a velcro cable band or something, it should be very strong.

+t. That looks like a very sensible solution for miniature mics. Any others out there?

Can you "lock" the angle of the mounts?

If I ever go open I'll definitely consider these mounts, especially as they will also take a small diameter "open" mic, should I wish to upgrade.

I made these with a few bucks worth of stuff from the hardware store:

I've got some ideas on updating the design. I was also thinking about the t-bar with one big slot instead of individual holes, and maybe some kind of angle indexing slots. Not sure if I'll ever get around to it. There was some interest in having me make a bunch of these to sell but I think we all got distracted from that project after a while and nothing ever came of it.

I think I'm more likely to make myself a j-disc before doing a new set of these since the first run still work pretty well.

I use the Audix SMT-Micro mounts and the same adjustable T-Bar pictured above.  K&M I think.

as noted, the SMT-Micros are tight, a bit of a pain in the ass, and provide little if
any shock protection, but all in all I'm pretty happy with the setup.

I also brewed up a nice mount using a Schoeps A20 shockmount. Used a piece of aluminum bar and some cable clamps to hold the mics. This setup is 20cm between mic heads at a 90 degree angle. It works very well.

Here's some shots I took with my 6 yr old AT853s in a DIN Kwonbar. I've only had this bar for a week so I've not recorded anything with this set as I probably never will (bought the bar for my SKM-140s):

Some correspondence with Tensimount. What a great guy:

Quote
Hi Jeff,

I'm a stealth audience taper based in the UK, but sometimes I like to go "open", and for this purpose I'd like to buy a mic stand.

We've been discussing your mounts on taperssection.com, and a couple of open tapers use your shock mounts.

They look ideal for mounting my tiny mics (Audio Technica 831s), but I can't figure out how to mount two mics on a T-bar.

Any suggestions how to do this? Could you ship to the UK?

Thanks for your time,

Alex

Quote
Hello Alex,

There are several ways you could mount two Tensimounts on a t-bar. If you are making your own t-bar, you could use a couple of the little threaded studs we sell (Lil’ Stubby) to mount the mic clips. You would have to drill a hole lengthwise through each Lil’ Stubby and use a bolt and nut to attach it to the end of the t-bar.

On the other hand, this system seems a bit elaborate and not ideal for your mics. The elastic elements in shockmounts work against the mass of the microphone, so that very lightweight mics should have very soft mounting to work ideally. For mics like yours, I have had great success in hanging them from foam strips. You could cut some strips from thin (1/8” thick?) soft foam, about 3” long and ¼” wide Fold back one end and tap it to itself to make a loop at this end that you can slip your mic into. Tape the other end of the strip to the end of your t-bar so that the mic is dangling down. The wires are looped back and taped to the t-bar and help keep the mics oriented properly. This will provide exceptional freedom from handling noises, and the only interference you will get will be from vibrations traveling up the cords, which can be further isolated by wrapping them in foam where you tape them to the t-bar. As you probably know, the ideal distance between the mics is about 16”.

Of course, if you follow this advice, we won’t sell you any Tensimounts, but that’s OK since we are on the verge of introducing a new product that is awesome for stealth taping. I’ll keep you posted.

Yours,  Jeff Brewer,   Brewer Instruments

Above reproduced with kind permissiion of Jeff Brewer. Apart from the "climbing frame", wonder what else he's invented?

Which part of the 853 fits into the Kwonbar? Does it clip to the fat part of the cable (where it attaches to the body of the mic) or the actual body of the mic itself?

Also, are those the SoundPro version of the 853 with the smaller body and the adapter to use the bigger AT capsules or are they the original AT mics? Thanks.

Its not the cable but the end of the mic body that slides into the groove cut in the bar. I never figured out the SP models, they're f'ing confusing! Anyway, I think what I have might be the 933 bodies with 853 caps.

can anyone tell me what type of thread adapter I would need to get that tensimount onto a bogen stand?  Or is an adapter even necessary?  That looks like a cheap and adequate solution for providing shock resistance to my soundpro tbar and 853s

I did this same exact thing the other night.  I basically took a ~20cm piece of 3/4" PVC and cut two 45* angles on the ends.  I cut two holes in the ends for the mics to go through the 'back' and face out 90 degrees at roughly 20cm apart.  I also spray painted the PVC black.  It looks real nice.  Now I just need to some cable extensions to get `em up in the air.

Can you post pics? I'm working on some new ideas for mounts right now and am thinking of somehting similar.
How do you keep the bar from rotating in the mounts? It it that tight of a fit that it just doesn't swivel?

The Kwon bar has a small, circular grooves that's bore on top and bottom of the "fork". This allows you to slide the base of the AT mics and Neumann KM100 caps to fit snug.

Hey matt,
were you asking me to post pics?  If so, I'll try to get a couple up on here.
Just making sure.

Ok, here's some that I took with my "state of the art" Logitech computer cam.  Sorry if they're grainy.
You'll notice that there's nothing actually holding the mics in the bar.  The 3/4" PVC holds the large AT windscreens with a nice snug fit...you could use a tiny bit of tape on the back to secure an angle or improvise otherwise.  I basically sawed 45~ degree angles on the ends of a 20cm pipe (that I found outside left from the apt maintenance guys...Go team Ghetto!)  Then I took a dremel tool and made the oval shaped holes on the back.*  I suggest using a pencil to plot out the lines/holes to cut.  Once that was done I used the dremel sander to 'soften' all the edges.  From there, covered in flat black spray paint.  Fits perfectly in the AT8410.

* - You might wonder at what distance from the end did I cut these holes.  Once the 45 degree angles were cut I set the mics on top (to see an aerial view of the bar with the mics set where they would be if the holes were cut).  I could then move the mics left/right until they were ~20cm away from each other.  I marked the spots on the "back" of the bar to cut(the long ends; angles facing band).

Cool. Thanks. The pics are plenty good to see what's going on.
I'm thinking of doing a PVC thing like that using one of my mini mounts like you use the 8410. Should be nice and compact. Seems like I could do NOS and ORTF on the same bar with the little holes the 933s will need. I'll post here if it works out.

Go team ghetto!

Yeah, in that picture the angle is closer to 100-110* than 90.  But the neat thing about the 'snug' fit is that you can move them around and they will (more or less) stay put.  So for FOB I could widen the angle a bit more than usual(depending on how close) and I can close the angle accordingly if I'm further back.  You could even cut two sets of holes (with a long piece of PVC of course) so you could do either DIN or NOS.  It's a pretty good substitute for the retail DIN bars for someone who would rather spend that $100 on other equipment.
