Opinion on new mics needed
« on: September 12, 2007, 10:36:23 PM »
I'm looking for a good pair of mics for my next set.  Something that has multiple cap selections as well and could be stealth, if necessary...

I was looking at pairs of the AKG 460 or 480 models, but I'm not looking to spend $600-800 on these.

So in your own opinion, what would be a good set of mics that run under $400, maybe up to $500 at the very, very most.

Thanx!

in my opinion, you already have them. your not gonna have much luck stealthing the 460/480s. just expand your cap collection for the 853s if you wanna spend some money.

^  Great suggestion!  853's make great tapes when using them low pro or open!  AT933's sound great as well, and, IIRC, have interchangeable caps.

Have fun and good luck!

If he gets that he'll also need a top hat (or perhaps a sombrero).     :P

Yeah, I can't really see myself in a giant sombrero!  LOL!  Plus the fans behind me would be PISSED!   ;D

I guess I should just stay with my AT853s and expand my cap collection.  Thanx!

Yeah, the reason is that there really aren't options in the price range you're talking about and that offer stealthiness and changeable capsules...at least that I know of.  If you were willing to expand your choice and not include stealth as a criteria, the Avantone and Oktava are pretty darned good sounding mics for your price point.

^^yeah they are. but at that kind of money you could save up an other hundred bucks or so and get some Peluso CEMC6's.  That is the best sounding mic under $1000 IMO.

I would look at the less expensie T.H.E. mics.  they run about $600 / pair.  probably hard to beat.
Also, I'd look into the Audix Micro line.  1290c/hc/o
3 caps to choose from, small enough to mount in a hat easily and they sound really good.
