V2 > MME Config
« on: April 01, 2004, 07:23:37 PM »
So i got my v2 today in the mail today and know i need to know how to run this with the mme.  I haven't searched the archives yet and i think the info is in there.  I think i remember reading run the levels from the v2 and not the mme, also turn the calpots down on the mme just so they are flickering.  I will have to play with it this week and get a feel for it.  Wish i could try it out tonight at Keller but this combo will have to wait for another night.  Also any tips or tricks for this combo would be really helpful.  i'm also using the TL's for mics and either c1vn or da-p1

you can run the calpots on the mme to your own preference, but use the gain on the v2 as much as necessary to get the proper levels you desire on your recording device.  after only taping two bands with this combo, ive very happy with it and think im finally content for awhile with my recording rig
Current Rig:
Mics: Neumann SKM184, Neumann SKM185, AKG C414 XLS/ST, DPA ST2015
Recorder: SD MixPre-6ii, SD MixPre-10ii
Extras: SD MixPre-D, SD USBPre2, Sony TCD-D8
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Former Rigs:
ADK TL --> Segue Dogstars --> SD 722
AT4051a --> Segue Dogstars --> MP-2 --> SD 722
AT4051a --> V2 --> MiniMe --> VxPocket V2 --> Laptop
AT4051a --> V2 --> MiniMe --> Sony TCD-D100
AT4051a --> V2 --> Mod SBM-1 --> Sony TCD-D100
AT4051a --> MP-2 --> AD1000 --> Sony TCD-D100
AKGC1000s --> Denecke PS/2 --> Denecke AD-20 --> Sony MiniDisc

This is, however, not the only way to run this combo. Run the V2 > Mme however you see fit. There is no right or wrong way to do so. Only what your ears (and fingers and eyes from staring at calpots)  like best. You can calibrate the MMe to the V2 by following the instructions on the SS website for calibration, or you can run the V2 at a certain level and fine tune with the calpots on the Mini Me at the show.  I run this combo both ways, depending on what I am in the mood for. I find myself fine tuning on the MMe with the calpots much more often though.

ditto what Jason said. If you want a sharper, cleaner sound, turn the mme way down, run the gain on the v2 up. If you want somewhere in the middle, do that. If you really like the mme color, and just want some minor tightening up, run the v2 down and turn the mme up with the calpots. Calibrating at home will result in mostly v2 in the mix, but will be the easist way to run the combo, since you won't have to touch the calpots during a show ever.

so this may be a dumb q, but why even run the mme at all behind if its gonna be on the lowest possible gain???

would the mme "color" still be in there???

to me, if the mme gain is at its lowest possible setting, the mme "sound" wouldnt be there, but ive never ran it so i have no clue!

cause if thats the case, run a v3;-)j/k

thanks guyz,

imo you still get a little mme pre color, because even run line in, with an outboard pre run hot, you still get nominal gain, which is like 11 db or so, not sure. Sure like v3>mme more than v3, though, personally.

whilest this may sound about awkward, in *most* circumstances I prefer m148>v3 to m148>mini me. The sound seems more pronounced and in your face than the mini me, plus no calpots.

In regards to thread, I learned to always run the pre low (if possible) and crank the a>d. However, I have never (ok once) run the v2, I did not know the a>d introduced more noise or is that not a generalization?

Agreed. This is the way I run my V2>ad1k combo. I basically max out the apogee and fine tune with the V2. Running the combo this way has given me the best results.
