Suggestions for a preamp
« on: April 06, 2004, 01:28:20 PM »
I currently run 391>MP2>SBM1.

Has anybody ever run the bluelines with the sbm1 with a different preamp in between?  I am satisfied with the way the MP2 sounds, and i like the size of it, but it is a little boomy on the low end, and i can only run my levels on the pre at about 8 o'clock which seems like it could get to be a problem if I was taping something really loud.I would like something a little smaller, like a sonosax or mv100 more than a V2.  Any suggestions of where I could find these sources to download would  be much appreciated.

edit: by "these sources" I mean:
391>sonosax>sbm1
391>V2>sbm1
391>MV100>sbm1
391>pretty much any preamp other than the MP2>sbm1

I would atleast consider 391>ps-2>sbm-1. I have heard many 480 tapes like this and really enjoyed them. That way, you could sell the mp-2 and start saving for the next purchase in your system

you may want to look into replacing the 391 with different mics instead of replacing the pre

yah the boominess you are talking about is somewhat characteristic of the 391

perhaps a v2 or even a dmic-20 (if you get rid of the sbm) will compensate for the boominess

maybe a presence mod UA-5?

Just thinking out loud...

So I ran the 391(s) with both phantom power/transformers into mod sbm1 and mp2 into mod sbm1 and I can say that the MP2 actually helped define the bass better than the phantom/transformers did.  My belief, as stated earlier, is that these mics are bass heavy in some environments as a characteristic.  That being said, I currently run Gefells>MP2>Mod SBM1 and the bass is incredible imho...well defined not overpowering, leading me to believe that my original belief on the characteristics of the 391(3)s weas about right.

Definitely dont let that stop you from trying a different preamp, because it absolutely may help...just throwing a different view out there, from a former user of these mics...which by the way, best mics at that price range imo!

+t for all of the advice guys.  I used to run a dmic20 for a while with a different set of mics, and i didnt really care for it that much, which definitely could have been the mics i was running with it.  I am not planning on getting rid of the mics+actives any time soon, I got them after waiting three months and have only used them once,  so i will get much more use before they get recycled.  I am trying to build a preamp, and I got some good encouragement this morning from an audio engineer, so i think ill see how that turns out before i buy anything. ;D

agreed, V2 and sbm-1 makes very nice tapes...sbm-1 makes things nice and warm while the V2 keeps things tight.
