Pro Tools 'First' will be free
« on: January 22, 2015, 07:04:40 PM »
Never really used Pro Tools. Seemed liked the learning curve was steeper than I wanted to deal with.

Apparently they will have a free 'beginners' version shortly.

No idea if it will be usefull enough for our kind of post recording work. Considering that many of us still use stuff like Audition 3 which now is many years old I guess it might be able to do better?

The one to contend with is Reaper, which is nearly free.  Give it a look if considering alternatives.

Interesting marketing strategy to hook new customers on something with the Pro Tools name and that looks pretty, but is probably going to be severely limited so that users will have to pay up if they want to do any real work.

Personally I'll stick with Reaper, which for $60 does everything Pro Tools does with zero restrictions.  And the "trial version" is the full program.  Why anyone would use Pro Tools after trying it is beyond me, unless they just like the brand association.

pro tools is good software. if you're simply "editing" shows you record for archive or torrent, audacity is all you need, or all i've needed. if you had a really old crappy recording that needs sprucing up, there are plugins that come with this version one could use for decent repair/effect/s. as for workflow, it's as hard or easy as your ability to learn its specifics.

depends what your plan is. if you want to learn professional editing for film, docs, music (like actual records), pt is not a bad thing to know. it's still pretty ubiquitous despite all of the complaints about its price, compatibility with every os x upgrade, etc.

reaper is a very good option. i've been following them ever since an old friend of mine started working on that project.. in the reaper forums he goes by "schwa" -- if i remember correctly -- and the developers do stay on top of consumer's questions.

I was going to come here and post this news after reading the following article... but it looks like I was a bit late to the party.  Not sure if I'll give PT a shot, or just stick with Audacity...
