Title: Field recording - sell AT4041 and get 3031? Or?
Post by: justme on August 05, 2018, 08:41:10 AM
I have a pair of AT4041, two pairs of CM3 and some others although not suitable for this.
I also have single AT3031 that I used some years ago for game sound design.

As I want to do more field recordings I need some advice on how to select the mics.
The 3031 have far lower self noise then the 4041 so would it make sense to sell the 4041 and try to find me another 3031?
Or should I keep the 4041 but sell a pair of CM3 and get a 3031?

Or just sell off more of them and get something else?

I feel a bit torn.
Anyone able to give me a kick in the right direction?

What are you planning on recording?  In the past I've used a few different mics from many of the manufactures.  I got out of the game when I got married, but a few months back I picked up a pair of AT4041 mics and they're fine for recording a PA with.

I want to record soundscape of the locations I shoot still photography at.
Often landscape, sometimes architectural and city.

Perhaps I'll better stop worrying and just go on with everything :)

For soundscapes I can recommend the Audio-Technica BP4025 X/Y Stereo Field Recording Microphone.

I'm very happy with mine for recording nature and soundscapes.

Very low self noise. Excellent reviews on the B&H website.
