Title: Extension pole to super clamp?
Post by: HealthCov Chris on July 28, 2018, 09:57:26 PM
In prep for taping at Red Rocks and other places where tripods are challenging, I need a Superclamp rig.  I don't see how to connect the extension pole to the Superclamp.  Suggestions please.

Most superclamps come with a 5/8" brass stud. If you don't have one, they are pretty easy to find. I have 3 or 4 in my bag.

Ok.  It just fits over the stud and tighten the bolt?

Typically what vanark said. Slide it over and tighten the screw down on the extension. However...

If anybody knows of a long stud I would like to know. My Lowel extension bites the threads, I ended up shearing it off at the base of the threads one night from mic weight. I bought two other sizes and it still bites threads. My only temporary solution was to bite the 3/4 end and buy adapters for the 1/4 end if I need to use the stud to T-bar. I'm thinking of using a long bolt with the head and threads cut off, seems like it would slip though.

If you haven't purchased anything yet...this is my Red Rocks rig:

The photo of the pole shows how it connects to the Superclamp. Very easy.

What does "bites the threads" mean? Do you have a pic?

BTW, the Manfrotto quick release clamp, and probably the Matthelini clamp, have long studs on them. There also appears to be a long stud available:

The tightening screw on the extension pole locks down (makes contact) on the threads of the stud, not the body. Which doesn't give a really solid connection anyway. At first I just tightened down on the 1/4" thread end since I wouldn't use it I didn't care if the threads were fubar. However, over time I guess it weakened and snapped one night. I bought another stud, still not quite long enough, and now screw down on the 3/4" end since it is wider and just use an adapter if I want to go from clamp, 1/4" stud thread, to T-bar, no extension pole. Or, clamp to mic mount. Hope that clears it up. No photos, sorry.

Something like what you posted would probably work, thanks.

That seems like pretty poor design by Lowel.

Awesome!  I already have both of those in my cart.  Just hoping someone had experience with that Matthews pole.  I like it is shorter than the Manfrotto.  I think I can hide it amongst the people while clamped to the drink rail. And saves a few $$.

Any pics in action? Cheers

Not my rig, but I think the one on the left in this thread is the same as mine. I usually set up vertically like the others in the picture...but I've considered angling my mics diagonally so I can get up higher and out farther from that railing. Obviously when it's full of tapers people aren't talking much...but sometimes I'm the only taper there so I'm surrounded by "regular folk."

I've actually been using a Karamy extension rod and superclamp for any clamping.  Stumbled across it and saw good reviews.  I have the 47.2" rod, which collapses down to 21.5" and straps to the side of my gear bag.

It has a reversible 3/8" and 1/4" treaded stud on one end, which can be positioned in 3 directions.  The other end has a fixed 1/4" threaded stud.  I put the fixed end into the superclamp usually and just tighten the screw down and am good to go.   They come in 23.6", 47.2", 70.9", and 94.5" versions.

I have no connection to the company, just pretty happy with the product (which only cost  $21).  Here's a link for anyone interested:

this (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/161307-REG/Matthews_420110_Matthellini_Clamp_2.html) is what I use with extension poles

I have another Matthews clamp (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/161530-REG/Matthews_420100_Matthellini_Clamp_2_Center_Silver.html) with an extender piece (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/686485-REG/Matthews_420113_Extendellini_For_Matthellini_Center.html) I use for tables and larger poles

the wider jaw is much more stable

I find this much more versatile than the super clamp

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/252212-REG/Manfrotto_649_649_Quick_Action_Release.html

I do own both though......

These are really cool!  A whole family of sizes depending on your needs, and all sizes $25 or less!  Thanks

Well, I went with the Karamy KER-E3120L & Impact SuperClamp.  Very bomber setup and cost effective.  There are a couple shorter and longer options with this brand too.  All for under $25.

Karamy KER-E3120L ($21): 21.5"-47";
Impact SuperClamp ($23): ratchet handle

Ha, apple juice.  Just had back surgery, so no booze for awhile.  But, going to try to get out tomorrow to record something.  Been too long!

Nice!  Glad same setup I run for clamping, never had a problem.  Glad I shared the Karamy as a option.
